Animal Care in the shelter 2023 Questions and Answers
with complete solution
What should all dogs, including owner relinquishments, should be checked for?
identification, rabies or license tags, tattoos (ears, abdomen and the inguinal region are
primary sites), and scanned for a microchip.
What should all dogs receive upon intake?
receive a preliminary physical examination and be issued an identification band and
shelter record that contains all the pertinent information for that animal, including
physical description, medical information, relinquishment information, and any
communications.
Why is the physical exam and preliminary behavior assessments needed in a
shelter?
The primary reasons for this urgency are to identify animals with injuries needing
immediate medical attention and to isolate those with infectious disease symptoms
before they have contact with the general population. An additional consideration is that
the behavior evaluation be used to identify aggressive, extremely shy, or otherwise
distressed animals who may need special housing and handling.
What does the physical exam consist of?
The dog's body weight should be recorded and the body condition score (BCS)
documented using a standard system (e.g. Hills or Purina scales) to indicate the overall
muscle mass and fat deposits. An estimate of age should made and the gender should
be determined as well as the reproductive status. An examination that assesses for
infectious diseases, injuries and pain should be conducted. Possible signs of infectious
disease include nasal and ocular discharge, sneezing and coughing, vomiting, diarrhea,
loss of appetite, depression, dehydration, fever, etc. The eyes, ears, mouth and teeth,
mucus membranes, mentation and demeanor, and ambulation should be evaluated.
The heart and lungs should be auscultated to detect any abnormalities that should be
further evaluated by a veterinarian. The skin should be checked for hair loss,
inflammation, lesions, lumps, infections, and signs of fleas and ticks. An assessment of
temperature, pulse, and respiratory rate may not be required for every animal, but
should be performed on any animal who is sick or debilitated, injured, or suspected of
having an infectious disease.
Temperature (Fahrenheit) dog
Adult dog=99.5-102.5, Puppy 5wks= 98-100
Respiratory rate (breaths/min) dog
Adult dog=10-30, Puppy 5wks=15-35
Pulse rate (beats/min) dog
Adult dog=60-180 Puppy 5wks=150-220
What information should be entered in regarding the dogs confirmation or
signalment?
When breed type is unknown or uncertain, rather than guess, it is more helpful to
designate dogs as mixed breeds and describe them as fully and accurately as possible.
Coat pattern/type, tail type, ear type, and any other characteristics about the dog should
be entered in.

, Identifying a dogs age?
You can identify a dogs age by checking the teeth for deciduous teeth, gray hairs
around muzzle, and checking eyes for cloudiness which occurs between 6-8 years in
age.
