To what extent is expanding Ribs & Burgers product range a suitable strategy for surviving the impact
of COVID-19?

Rationale:
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected businesses globally due to mandatory public lockdowns and
social distancing measures. Ribs & Burgers is a gourmet fast-food franchise, with various stores open
around the world. It is considering the expansion of their product range to ensure its survival of the
impact of the pandemic. Carrying out this report will enable the owner of R&B in London, Mr
Stathacopoulos, to examine the effectiveness of this strategy in consideration of the business’
finances.

Theoretical Framework
In this report, both qualitative and quantitative techniques will be utilised to provide the business with
a recommendation. Non-financial techniques include Ansoff’s Matrix, to identify what type of
expansion will take place, a SWOT analysis in order to identify and analyse the internal and external
factors affecting the business’ current situation, and a STEEPLE analysis to further analyse the
external environment in more detail. In addition, a decision tree is used to evaluate whether or not it is
financially viable to expand Ribs & Burger’s product range.

Methodology:
Primary Research:
● Interview the owner of the UK, London branch to obtain details regarding the business
operations, the potential future decision, and the current financial position, as it is an
appropriate form of collecting information to start my analysis.
Secondary Research:
● Review government publications and other media related to COVID-19, in terms of how
businesses were affected, in order to conduct a comparative analysis and ensure the expansion
will be a suitable strategy to survive the impacts of the pandemic.
● Review a range of media articles related to the effects of COVID-19 on the British economy,
and consumer spending patterns.

Problems likely to be encountered
A possible problem that I may encounter whilst conducting and writing up this investigation is that
there may be various confidentiality restrictions with financial information, however, a potential
solution would be to work in relative terms, such as percentages or standardised values. Another issue
may be that interview questions are too limiting, however, I will research effective questionnaire
designs and apply similar question types to ensure valid and useful responses. Lastly, there may be a
biased or limited perspective from my interviewee, which I will acknowledge in my report.
