A review of It Starts With Us by Colleen Hoover
Colleen Hoover is the New York bestselling author of many novels, such
as Maybe Not, It Ends With Us ,and Ugly Love. Hoover is an American
author of romance and young adult fiction. Many of her books were
published by her before being chosen by a publishing house. She was born
on December 1979, in Texas. In October 2022, she sold more than 21
million books. After her successful book It Ends With Us, the attention
came quickly from Colleen’s fans to reveal a second part of the book,
which she released in October 2022 the novel It Starts With Us.
It Starts with us is a romance novel about love, hope, and growth after a
heartbreaking decision. “Sometimes the hardest decisions a person can
make will most likely lead to the best outcomes.” (p.12). The novel is
divided into 37 chapters, a story about Lily and Atlas, and how their fate
and circumstances worked and brought them together after many years. The story is told from
the alternative perspectives of two main characters, Lily and Atlas. This makes it much easier
for the reader to live in the character’s life and feelings. Lily deals with her chaotic life as a
single mom and owner of a floral shop. Atlas, dealt with a
traumatic childhood and was homeless in his youth. He is single and owns two restaurants, he
is still hoping to be a part of Lily’s life after she got married and got a daughter. But Lily can’t
handle her jealous ex-husband, who doesn’t like Atlas. The main theme in this book is having
the power to set boundaries to survive domestic abuse, Lily had to make a step forward to
protect herself and her daughter from what happened in her past.
Hoover has given us as readers a full journey of feelings and parts where we hold our breath,
with realistic characters, and captivating moments. This book gently resolves some of the
traumas that happened in the first book. This book makes you choose the right path and gives
you the courage to fight against wrong things. The end of this novel make you feel there is
nothing that stays unsolved, everything heals by time and believing a in second chance of
love. Colleen guides us to be brave to set our boundaries from people to live happy and free,
as Lily does, “Don’t think about where we used to be; just think about where we are” (p.23)
and to give our lives a second chance to be happy and let things go and forget what we were.
