LEAFLET - 1
PHYSICAL THERAPIES
1. RADIOTHERAPY - Thyroid Cancer
Radiation treatment, in high dosages, destroys cancer cells or inhibits their
development by destroying their DNA. Cancer cells that have had their DNA
damaged beyond repair either cease proliferating or die. When damaged cells
die, the body breaks them down and removes them. Radiation treatment
employs ionising radiation, which has enough energy to remove one electron
from the outer shell of an atom, more than 124 electron volts.
Radiation treatment does not immediately destroy cancer cells. It might take
days or weeks of therapy to damage DNA sufficiently for cancer cells to die.
The cancer cells then continue to die for weeks or months after the radiation
therapy is finished.
There are two types of radiotherapy to treat thyroid cancer and of them is
radioiodine therapy. Radioactive iodine therapy, which is now normal practice
in cases of papillary or follicular thyroid cancer that has progressed to the
neck or other body areas, helps patients live longer lives. However, the
advantages of RAI treatment are less obvious for persons with tiny thyroid
tumours that do not appear to have spread and can typically be removed
completely with surgery.
Internal radiotherapy includes radioactive iodine treatment. It employs a
radioactive type of iodine known as iodine 131. (I-131). Because the thyroid
gland collects and retains the majority of the iodine in your body, it is an
effective therapy for thyroid cancer. Iodine is obtained by the thyroid gland
from specific meals and used to produce vital thyroid hormones.
Radioactive iodine is a very specific therapy. The radioactive iodine flows in
your bloodstream throughout your body. However, it is mostly absorbed by
thyroid cells and has minimal effect on other cells. Iodine is taken up by
thyroid cancer cells in your body. The iodine's radiation subsequently destroys
the cancer cells.
RAI i removes any normal thyroid tissue that remains in the neck after
surgery, which is known as radioiodine residual ablation (RRA).
RRA is used to treat any thyroid cancer that cannot be treated surgically.
Reduce the chance of thyroid cancer recurring (recurrence) by treating thyroid
cancer that has returned after therapy. Normally, the thyroid gland absorbs
iodine from our diet and converts it into thyroid hormones. When you get RAI,
, your thyroid cells absorb iodine and receive a strong dosage of radiation. This
eliminates thyroid cells as well as any cancer cells that may remain after
surgery. RAI does not have the same effect on other sections of the body.
This is due to the fact that other cells do not absorb iodine as well as thyroid
cells.
2. OSTEOPATHY - Back and Spinal injuries
Osteopathy is a method of identifying, treating, and avoiding health issues
through the movement, stretching, and massage of a person's muscles and
joints.Osteopathy is founded on the idea that an individual's well-being is
dependent on their bones, muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue all
working in harmony.
Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) diagnose and treat all ailments and
injuries, and many specialise in treating back pain.
The focus on the musculoskeletal system as one of the fundamental factors to
total health and well-being is one of the differentiating features of osteopathic
medicine, as opposed to particular symptoms or disorders. When necessary,
conservative (non-surgical) treatment may include osteopathic manipulative
therapy (OMT), medicines, and any other recognised methods.
Osteopaths utilise manual manipulation, stretching, and massage to increase
joint mobility, relieve muscular tension, reduce pain, improve blood circulation
to tissues, and aid in the healing process.
Most people seek treatment from an osteopath for conditions affecting the
muscles, bones, and joints, such as lower back pain, uncomplicated neck pain
(as opposed to neck pain caused by an injury, such as whiplash), shoulder
pain and elbow pain, arthritis, pelvic, hip, and leg problems, and sports
injuries.
If your lower back discomfort is creating serious issues or isn't improving, it
may be worth attempting manual therapy. Manual therapy is a treatment in
which your practitioner manipulates and moves your joints and soft tissues
with skillful hand motions.
Osteopaths utilise a range of mild hands-on treatments to try to relieve your
pain and keep it from returning. These are intended to relieve stress and
enhance the way your body moves. This sort of therapy can be provided by
an osteopath for either short-term or long-term general lower back discomfort.
