This essay draws attention to the different influences which lead to a Philosopher's way
of discourse and highlights language as a classification between two schools of African
philosophy: Anglophone and Francophone African philosophy, the trends and
classifications arising from these philosophies will also be elaborated upon.

Different Approaches in Philosophy
There are numerous approaches which lead a philosopher to think in a certain way, like
location and language or fields of interests, even their original thought-process they
already possess when approaching a defined problem. They also differ in methods used
to solve philosophical problems and moreso, they also have different views of what
actually constitutes a philosophical problem. In terms of African philosophy- these
differences of approaches are visible in the trends and classifications of African
philosophy (Mkhwanazi, 2017, p.24).
The most general classification of African philosophy: Language
The very idea of African philosophy has introduced the problem of language. The
present argument is that for a philosophy to be undeniably African- the language and
way it’s expressed must be African. Some philosophers are of the opinion that there can
be no African philosophy, unless there is a philosophy in African languages (Ojimba,
Haaga and Ikuli, 2015, p.105).
One way of categorising philosophies in Africa, is based on language. The most
broadscale classification of African philosophy is Anglophone African philosophy
(English) and Francophone African philosophy (French) (Mkhwanazi, 2017, p.25).
Anglophone African philosophy originated from the English colonial countries in the
African continent. This philosophy arose from a more troubled context and provides for
a more analytical style of philosophising and thus, gives for a more closed perception of
philosophy (Mkhwanazi, 2017,p.25).
“Anglophone African philosophy emerged partly in reaction to Placide Tempels. African
philosophers in this category embarked on an ‘apologetic’ philosophy, explaining
alternative worldviews of African people as opposed to the derogatively 'primitive’
mentality of Africans expressed by the West” (Mkhwanazi, 2017,p.25).
Anglophone African Philosophy presents a dual movement: (1) Retaliation against
colonialism; (2) Struggle for the professionalisation of African philosophy, some leading
figures in this movement include; Kwasi Wiredu and Odera Oruka (Mkhwanazi, 2017).
