SED2601– UNIQUE NUMBER 677041 – ASSIGNMENT 2 - STUDENT NUMBER 45157030

QUESTION 1
a)
i. Macrosociological is an approach to sociology which emphasizes the
analysis of social systems and populations on a large scale, at the level of
social structure and often at a necessarily high level of theoretical
abstraction (Siyakwazi et al 2018:98). e.g. When a sociologist examines how
the working class operates in a society such as South Africa, they will be
using a macro perspective.

ii. Microsociological is one of the main levels of analysis of sociology,
concerning the nature of everyday human social interactions and agency on
a small scale, face-to-face (Siyakwazi et al 2018:98). It is based on
interpretative analysis rather than statistical or empirical observation and
shares close association with the philosophy of phenomenology. e.g. The
interaction between a teacher and a learner.

iii. Socialisation is the process of internalising the norms and ideologies of
society, it encompasses both learning and teaching and thus the means by
which social and cultural continuity are attained. It is strongly connected to
development psychology, humans need social experience to learn their
culture and survive and also essentially represents the whole process of
learning throughout the life course and is central influence on the behaviour,
beliefs and actions of adults as well as children (Siyakwazi et al 2018:30).
e.g. Religion, a congregation of a certain church internalise the social norms
of the church such as punctuality.

iv. Transmission of culture is the process of learning through which the
values, standards, norms of a culture are passed on to succeeding
generation (Siyakwazi et al 2018:102). It is the knowledge that is learned
and transmitted to later generations, this ability to transmit knowledge to
other people in writing, conversion of abstract information, and explanations
is unique to man and can be passed on through time, this transmission of
information between members of a cultural group occurs during the process
of enculturation and socialization and it can be vertical, oblique or horizontal.

e.g. Any members of one generation talks to any non-biological related
members of a later generation.

v. Social class is a set of subjectively defined concepts in the social sciences
and political theory centred on models of social stratification in which people
are grouped into a set of hierarchical social categories, the most common
being the upper, middle and lower classes, it is also a group of people within
a society who poses the same socio economic status (Siyakwazi et al 2018:
100).

b) Yes. The norms and standards regulations apply to all public schools in South
Africa. This is of great significance, because it means that all learners in South,
regardless of race and class will be able to learn in an environment with
adequate infrastructure. It is now law that every school must have water,
electricity, internet, laboratories, working toilets and safe classrooms with a
maximum of 40 learners (Siyakwazi et al 2018:98,102).

QUESTION 2
a)
i. Diversity is the degree of differences in identifying features among the
members of a purposefully defined group such as gender, it is also any
dimension that can be used to differentiate groups of people from one
another. It is about empowering people by respecting appreciating what
makes them different, in terms of age, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual
orientation and nation origin (Siyakwazi et al 2018:77-78, 96,). e.g. Students
with learning and physical disabilities.

ii. Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a group of people,
encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. It
is a way of life of a group of people, meaning the way they do things which
is passed on to the next generation by learning and it is a particular set of
customs, moral codes and traditions from a specific time and place, which
is a high degree of taste, knowledge and interest in arts, literature and other
