You have been asked to write an article to promote your local health and social care settings. You
intend on visiting a variety of settings in your area and speaking to the service users and staff in order
to gain a better understanding and insight into the daily care provided in each setting. Your article is
going to highlight how each setting promotes anti-discriminatory practice with examples to support
your findings.

Scenario: After completing your article and speaking to residents and staff you have uncovered some
of the difficulties that have arisen while implementing anti-discriminatory practice regarding both the
staff and service users. You have discovered that four of the settings have had to deal with conflict
and have been asked to give suggestions as to how you would challenge and overcome such conflicts.
To complete M3 & D2 you will need to explain difficulties that may arise and discuss how you would
challenge and overcome these conflicts in detail using the following 4 case studies, where possible include
policies and procedures.
Case Study 1: Ethical Principles
Georgia began to hear voices in her head, she told her friend about the voices and she advised that she see
her GP. Quickly Georgia was escalated through a referral system and was diagnosed with schizophrenia,
soon the voices began to become more violent and Georgia became a danger to herself and those around
her, she was then sectioned under the Mental Health Act (2007). Now Georgia has been sectioned she has
lost some of her individual rights, her family are upset and refute the decision to section Georgia.

Case Study 2: Support with the beliefs, culture and preferences of the service user
Aran is staying at Summerfield care home, he is of Jewish faith but still likes to join in with other religious
festivals. Due to his cultural diversity the care home decided not to celebrate Hanukkah as they decided it
was too long and would interfere with too many other service users. Aran felt highly distressed and upset
about this decision but felt powerless to change the managers’ mind on the issue. Aran only has one son
who visits him who has also complained about this decision verbally and in writing but Summerfield care
home did not reply.

Case Study 3: Balancing individual rights with the rights of others
Sophie attends Philips Academy High School, at meal times Halal chicken & vegetarian options are
available, but these meal options are not available every day, so some days those students, like Sophie who
are vegetarian have no food available to them and also other students who are of Islam faith have no food
available to them either. Sophie’s mothers complained to the school and they suggested that Sophie and
those of Islam faith should bring packed lunches.

Case Study 4: Identifying and challenging discrimination
Isabella has been on work placement in a nursery which cares for young children with special needs, whilst
on work placement she noticed that one child, Joseph, who has severe Down syndrome is constantly left out
of activities and sometimes misses meal times due to staff overlooking him. Isabella feels very strongly that
the staff are being unfair and are purposely excluding Joseph as sometimes he can be difficult, Josephs’
parents are unaware of this neglect.

Anti discriminatory practice is the practices that are practiced in health and social care settings t counter
discriminations that are based on an individuals race, background, gender, culture, disability, skin colour
and more in the united kingdom. Anti discriminatory practice does this by promoting equality and
introducing policies that counter discrimination in work places and health and social care settings.
Individual rights-
Individual rights are an individuals freedom and liberties that every individual has to they can live their life
without their rights being taken away or interfered by other people or the government. Individual rights
allow individuals and ourselves live our life the way we want to live it as we can make our own decisions
about our life and the things we can do.
Some individual rights are:
To be treated with respect,
To get treated equally and not get discriminated against,
To be treated as an individual,
To be treated in a dignified way,
To be allowed privacy,
To be protected from danger and harm,
To have access to information about themselves, communicate using preferred method,
To get cared for in a way that meets their needs,
Our choices taken into account and also be protected
In a health and social care environment such as a care home service user will be given their individual
rights and the care home will promote a way of life for service users that allows them to enjoy their rights
as an individual person. They would promote individual rights by allowing a service user to have privacy for
example allowing them time to do things they want on their own and giving them a secure place to change
etc. This allows the service user to be free from intrusion and feel comfortable. The care home staffs would
treat individuals with dignity they will do this by valuing the service user as individuals and understanding
their needs and maintain the dignity at all times.
Hospitals also promote individual rights by giving service user independence by involving them in their own
care such as allowing them to make decisions for there care and given them options on what they would
want to do. Also asking them what their concerns and the ways they would like to be treated. A hospital
would also promote individual rights by making sure there is security within the building so the service
users are protected and are not exposed to danger and risks. Such as having buzzers in entrance of every
unit which allows visitors to press button and someone would then let them in after confirming the reason
of visit this will keep service users in the hospital units safe and secure and protected.
Identifying and challenging discriminations-
If any kind of discrimination is identified in a health and social environment it has to be challenged
immediately.
1. We can challenge discrimination by ensuring that all policies and procedure are being followed by
all staff. This is important as it ensures that all members of staff in a health and social care setting
are following the policies and procedures. By following policies and procedures staff will be aware
and will be know how they are expected to treat service user and visitors. The policies and
procedures will guide the staffs on how to provide care and how to treat service users when
providing care. However if the staffs don’t follow these policies and procedures are also policy's in
place where they will be disciplined and be provided with chances of grievance or the setting can
