2. Feiten (objecten van a posteriori kennis).
A priori kennis - Kennis die niet afhangt van zintuiglijke ervaring (empirie).
- Kennis die niet voorafgaat aan de ervaring en bijgevolg gebaseerd is
op de rede.
- Bv. logische en wiskundige kennis (formele wetenschappen).
A posteriori kennis - Kennis die wel afhankelijk is van zintuiglijke ervaring (empirie).
- Kennis die wel degelijk gebaseerd is op de empirie.
- Bv. natuurwetenschappelijke kennis (empirisch-formele
wetenschappen).
Noodzakelijke waarheid - Waarheid die niet onwaar zou kunnen zijn.
- (Meestal) a priori gekend door het verstand.
- Bv. de waarheden van de logica en de wiskunde.
Contingente waarheid - Waarheid die niet noodzakelijk waar is.
- Waarheid die onwaar zou kunnen zijn indien de werkelijkheid anders
was geweest.
- (Meestal) a posteriori gekend door de zintuigen.
- Bv. het zou onwaar kunnen zijn (ook al is het contingent waar) dat
je nu zit.
Analytisch oordeel/ Propositie (zin) die waar is krachtens de betekenissen van haar delen
analytische propositie (termen).
Synthetisch oordeel/ Propositie die waar is krachtens andere elementen dan de
synthetische propositie betekenissen van haar delen.
Verificatieprincipe - Criterium voor cognitieve significantie.
- Demarcatiecriterium dat een van de pijlers was van het logisch
positivisme.
- Het zinvol zegbare is beperkt tot dat wat empirisch te verifiëren is.
Verificatie - Onderzoek naar de waarheid of authenticiteit van iets (bevindt zich
op niveau van de betekenis, niet van de waarheid).
- Een zin (bewering, assertie) is cognitief betekenisvol, indien de
waarheid (of onwaarheid) van die zin in principe kan bepaald
worden a.d.h.v. observaties (zintuiglijke en experimentele gegevens
of empirische data); of kortweg, indien de zin verifieerbaar is.
Feitelijke verificatie Effectief aantonen dat een bewering waar is.
Principele verifieerbaarheid Moet o.b.v. mogelijke observaties principieel mogelijk zijn om uit te
maken of hij waar dan wel onwaar is.
