Global organisations are not new but have
been important in the post-1945 world
The United Nations was the first post-war IGO to be established and has grown in
importance; its role in global governance is affected by the different geopolitical
visons of members of the Security Council and its multiple functions in managing
global environmental, socio-economic and political problems
Since the end of the Second World War in 1945, there has been an acceleration
towards global governance. Leading the way was the United Nations (UN), an
umbrella organisation for many global agencies, treaties and agreements
Global governance is based on the notion of steering or piloting rather than the direct
form of control associated with national government. So global governance sets the
rules, norms and codes that regulate human activity at an international level

, An inter-governmental organisation composed primarily of sovereign nation states. They
help uphold treaties and international law, as well as allowing co-operation on issues
such as trade, economic policy, human rights, conservation and military operations

Why was the UN formed in 1945?
The UN was tasked to promote international cooperation and to create and maintain
international order. It was a replacement for the ineffective League of Nations, after
World War II with the aim of preventing another such conflict
The UN's headquarters are in New York, USA.
The UN states that only international co-operation can meet the challenges that the
world faces and it operates by applying the principles of its Charter (signed at the
founding of the UN).

members and some other members rotate onto the Council.
The UN does not have its own military. Any peacekeeping forces under the UN banner
are supplied by member states of the UN.

The UN established the Geneva Convention which protects the rights of prisoners.

What are the functions of the UN?
Aims to protect human rights by adopting the UDHR (Universal Declaration of Human
Rights) as a standard.
Applies economic or diplomatic sanctions to countries, in order to make them change
their behaviour.
