Communication in an organization
Introduction and background information.
I've worked as an educator at Gustav Preller for the last seven years. Being able to
communicate with so many different characters every day is a fantastic experience.
The organization I selected, a school, runs differently yet similarly to any other
workplace, except that there are often 40 students in each class, each of whom has a
different culture, language, religion, and learning style that must be taken into account
while engaging with them.
There are numerous stakeholders engaged in a school in addition to instructors and
students. Every organization is only as good as its management, and every school
has a principal who is in charge of overseeing daily operations like developing policies,
a code of conduct, infrastructure, management plans, and interviews in accordance
with the department of education and the school governing body, which is made up of
parents and teachers. The vice principal is generally in charge of maintaining order
and managing daily contacts with coworkers, students, and parents. A school also
includes the following individuals: The HOD (Head of Department) and grade and
subject heads, who oversee their respective topic domains for each grade, make up
the SMT (school management team). In such an organization, the parents,
administrative, and financial personnel, as well as the ground staff, are all present.
Any school must have efficient communication in order to function properly.
The discussion of communication in an organization will be specifically focused on
workplace communication issues in the essay that follows, along with suggestions on
how to enhance organizational communication. Gustav Preller Primary, a primary
school in Roodepoort, employs a senior staff member named Mrs. R Grobbelaar
(Head of department) who I spoke with about the role of communication in Gustav
Preller Primary. The interview lasted around an hour and was held in the HOD office
after school. As a result, my analysis of the workplace difficulties will be based on what
I learned from the organization. The article will go through the several communication
difficulties that Gustav Preller was found to have. The solution to overcome these
difficulties will be suggested in order to enhance communication.
An article called, What is communication (publisher), 2022), defines communication
as: “The Latin term communicare, which meaning to share or make common, is the
origin of the English word "communication" (Weekley, 1967). The process of
comprehending and exchanging meaning is referred to as communication (Pearson &
Nelson, 2000).”
According to Greenberg (2011, p .321), “you would not be shocked to find that
managers spend up to 80% of their time communicating in some way given how
important it is to businesses”. At all levels of an organization, effective communication
is a crucial tool for fostering productivity and solid working relationships. Employees
will quickly develop trust in employers who put effort into providing open channels of
communication, which will boost production, productivity, and morale in general.
Employees that can successfully interact with coworkers, supervisors, and customers
are a constant value to an organization (Page, 2019). Poor communication in the

workplace will inevitably lead to unmotivated staff that may begin to question their own
confidence in their abilities and inevitably in the organisation.
There are about 800 students and 50 staff members at Gustav Preller Primary.
Effective communication is essential amongst all parties always involved to ensure
that everyone is recognized and appreciated, including staff members, parents, and
students. The article will go through the several communication difficulties that Gustav
Preller was found to have and recommendations on how to improve the
communication in Gustav Preller.
Findings based on my interview with Mrs. Grobbelaar (HOD)
What I discovered about communication in the school after speaking with Mrs.
Grobbelaar was very interesting. According to her, communication in a school is a big
problem and it is not so simple. “You have to deal with so many different people all at
ones and its often, almost every day that messages do not get delivered or understood
correctly and that creates a ripple effect throughout the whole school”. I asked to allot
of questions and the responses was very informative, she mentioned that with the
technology that is advancing at such a pace its difficult to keep up with all the new
communication platforms and sometimes it can feel daunting especially as schools
are busy integrating technology in classrooms and online teaching. During my
interview I noted that Mrs. Grobbelaar said that all organizations must implement The
Protection of Personal Information Act No 4 of 2013 and in a school setting, it makes
it more challenging, because there are so many (WhatsApp) groups for different
councils and personal information regarding learner marks that moves around. It was
interesting to find that she said we are not allowed to discuss any learner Infront of
anyone as the learner or his/her parents must first give written consent. I have
discovered that it is important to respect everyone’s culture, religion, language, skill,
and age and that it is not always easy to keep everyone happy in a big organization.
According to Mrs. Grobbelaar: “Schools acquire, process and publish personal
information daily, we also need to consider shared office space and social media
pages, in the school context it is illegal to take a photograph of a learner or the learners
work without his/her explicit consent and without safeguarding the data” I noted that
she hammered on the fact that Informed consent and de – identification of information
are essential in the workplace and that photographs, symbols and verbal gestures all
a form of communicating is and that we as staff members must at all time act
responsible and professional not only to protect the schools reputation but to consider
and respect each values and build each other up in order to be successful.
The challenges encountered by the organization concerning communicating:
According to Greenberg (2011. P. 349) “Improving the communication process in
organizations may have highly desirable pay offs for organizations as well for the
individuals and groups working for them”.
While open and effective communication should be a top goal for any organization,
there are specific problems and difficulties that both managers and staff must resolve
in order to achieve this. Although tools like business screen background software and
