WRITING TASK 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people believe that television programmes are of no real value for
children.

How far do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own
knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.


The Task:
IELTS writing task 2 involves writing an essay on the given topic. You have to:
 answer the question(s) clearly and completely.
 give reasons for your answer.
 include relevant examples from your knowledge/experience if applicable.
 spend about 40 minutes on the task.
 write at least 250 words (260-275 words are ideal).
 take note that task 2 is worth 2/3 of your total mark on the writing test.

 One introduction paragraph:
o Approximately 30-50 words
o Re-write the topic in your own words (paraphrasing), do not copy exact.
o Indicate what you are going to write in the essay.
 Two content paragraphs:
o Approximately 80-100 words for each paragraph
o May have up to three content paragraphs if neccessary. For three content
paragraphs, each is about 70 words long.
 One conclusion paragraph:
o Approximately 30-50 words
o Write your opinion and/or summary of the contents

1. Task Response (TR) :
This criterion assesses how accurately the essay addresses the topic. You have to:
o Answer all questions with relevant points.
o Write a clear introduction and summary for the essay.


2. Coherence and Cohesion (CC) :
This aspect measures how well the sentences are organised and linked together in
the essay. You have to:
o Ensure an overall flow or progression in your essay.
o Organise ideas and information logically.
o Use linking words correctly and sufficiently.


3. Lexical Resources (LR) :
This refers to the range of vocabulary used and the accuracy and appropriacy of the
words with respect to the specific topic. You have to:
o Use a wide range of vocabularies, including less common words, accurately.
o Pay attention to the words or phrases used, in terms of:
a. Range and level
b. Precision and style
o Avoid vocabulary mistakes in:
a. Spelling
b. Word choice and word formation


4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GR) :
This includes the range and the accurate use of grammatical resources. You have to:
o Use various grammatical structures correctly.
o Use a variety of sentence structures, including complex/compound structures,
appropriately.
o Avoid mistakes in terms of Grammar and Punctuation

a. Some people think that a sense of competition in children should be encouraged.
Others believe that children who are taught to co-operate rather than compete

b. In some countries, it is usual for young people who graduate from high school to
spend a year working or travelling before going to university.
What are the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this?

c. While some people prefer to live in apartments, others do not think an apartment
is a suitable form of accommodation.
Do you think the advantages of living in an apartment outweigh the disadvantages?

3. Issue discussion:
a. Housing shortage has become a major problem in many countries around the world.
What are some of the main factors that have contributed to this problem?
What can be done to help reduce the number of homeless people?

b. While mobile phones have many advantages, a number of problems have also
resulted from them or the ways in which they are used.
What are some of these problems?
What solutions can you suggest for solving these problems?

c. In many countries today insufficient respect is shown to older people
What do you think may be the reasons for this?
What problems might this cause in society?

4. Mixed type:
Universities should provide students with the skills they will require in order to succeed
at their future jobs.
How far do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?
What are some of the job skills that employers look for in new employees?
