This document is a complete detailed summary with pictures of all the articles and lectures from course 3.4 of the Erasmus Rotterdam University International Psychology course: Organizational Psychology
Lecture 1 - Organizational Structure &
Strategy
What is organizational psychology?
,The 3 levels:
1. Micro or individual level
2. Meso or group level → group behavior (e.g. department)
3. Macro or organizational level
Priorities for 2022 in organizations:
➢ Data-driven HR policies → scientific approach
➢ Increase internal mobility → how to use what you already have rather
than find new people (which can be challenging)
➢ Reform working conditions
, ➢ Mental health
Priorities for 2023 in organizations:
➢ Flexibility thanks to fluid HR (e.g. hybrid etc..)
➢ Accelerated digitalization
➢ Smart SPend Management
➢ Employees want personalization → more modern organizational theory
→ we need to stop wor with the workforce in a single way → should be
tailored around the individual
,How do Organizations Differ?
Porter’s Five Forces that shape strategy → these forces can
be high or low for different companies
➢ every CEO should answer these 5 forces otherwise they wouldn’t know how to
place their organization in the market
1. Threat of New Entrants → how new entries (e.g. Uber) shape competition by
being a threat to other organizations → how much of a threat to other
organizations would the entrance of uber be in the market
Example Uber: not very high
2. Power of Suppliers → where the company is buying from/getting their supplies
(not the companies themselves)
Example Uber: low → they are replaceable and not unionized
3. Power of Buyers → clients → if clients can easily move from one company to
another to buy what is most convenient for them → they have a lot of power
Example Uber: high → no switching costs between services, can easily decide to use
taxis, metros etc..
Example: If you switch from Netflix to Disney + and had to pay a price to
unsubscribe/switch → power of buyers would be lower
4. Threat of Substitute Products or Services
Example Uber: low/ medium (uber is a substitute for taxi, not the other way
around)→ very rarely high
