Assignment B - PPP Grammar Lesson Table: First Conditional
✔ NB: Look at the model provided and make sure you understand what MFP refer to here. See Units 2 and 7. For example, in number 4
in the table below, we do NOT mean 'What is the function of the lesson'!!!

1. What is the target form of the first conditional First Conditional
(both clauses)? (F)
If +S + present simple>>S + will + infinitive
2. What is the model sentence you will elicit to If I throw a birthday party, I will invite all my friends.
begin your presentation?
3. What are the negative and question Model sentence in negative form: If I throw a birthday party, I will not invite all my friends.
(interrogative) forms of your model sentence? Form: If+ S+ present tense>>S+ will+ not+ infinitive
(You might find there is more than one possibility,
but you only need to show one negative and one Model sentence in question form: If I throw a birthday party, will I invite all my friends?
question, then analyse the forms.) Form: If +S + present simple>> will+ S+ infinitive
4. What is the function? (M) 1. To talk about actions/events in the future which are likely to happen (possible plans)
2. To make a prediction: to get a result, there must be a condition: If you study hard,
you will pass exam
3. To express a promise: If you tidy your room, you will play on your phone.
4. To persuade someone: If you drink this cup of tea, you will feel better.
5. To warn about a possible negative effect: If you don’t put sunscreen on, you will get
sunburnt.
6. To threaten: If you yell at me, I will tell mum.

I will analyse the model sentence: it is likely that I will throw a birthday party and that I will
invite all my friends. To have all my friends gathered at my place, I need to throw a birthday
party. I have a possible plan, a condition (birthday) and a result (invite all my friends).
The same as in the sentence: If you study hard, you will pass your exam. There cannot be a

, result (pass my exam) if there is not a condition: to study hard. Based on this, I am making a
prediction.

I will also give the following examples and let the students tell what they express.
If it is sunny tomorrow, we will go to the beach.
If you tidy your room, you can play video games.
If you come to my house, I will show you my puppy.

5. What do students need to know about Pronunciation: In the affirmative form, the subject and the auxiliary verb Will are
pronunciation, including sentence stress and contracted- I’ll (instead of I will) and in the negative form the auxiliary Will and the negation
intonation? (P) not are contracted: I won’t (instead of I will not).
(Think only about how the model sentence would
normally be said.) Sentence stress: main verbs and content words (nouns, adjectives, adverbs and negative
auxiliary) carry stress.

In the model sentence, the main verb throw and the noun birthday party are stressed in the
first clause. In the second clause, again the main verb invite is stressed, as well as the
noun friends.

Intonation: In conditional sentences in affirmative and negative forms, the voice rises
slightly at the end of the first clause (suggesting that the speaker has more to say) and falls
at the end of the second clause.
E.g. If I throw ➚ a birthday party, I invite all my ➘ friends.

, In the interrogative form, the voice rises at the end of the second clause: E.g. If I throw ➘ a
birthday party, will I invite all my ➚ friends?

6. What is the context I will use to introduce the Talking about the birthdays-activities they like doing.
form? (M) After that, I will mention it will be my birthday soon and I don’t have any plans. I was
thinking about throwing a party (which is another way of saying having a party); however, if
I throw a birthday party, what will I need/do/make? I will ask them for suggestions.
7. How will I try to elicit the first conditional from I will start with the if clause: If I throw a birthday party and let them join in with ideas.
the students? I anticipate that they will use Present Tense in the main clause, maybe something like ‘I buy
balloons’. I will not jump in to correct the tense; I would tell they are nearly correct, eliciting
the future form.
After eliciting will, I will drill the entire structure: If I throw a birthday party, I will buy
balloons, for example. Next, I will let them suggest something else and continue with choral
drilling at the end of each sentence.
8. How will I encourage students to analyse the I would use one of the sentences given as an example: ‘If you tidy your room, you can play
form (S+V, etc.) themselves rather than just telling video games’. First, I would ask them to find the verbs, then the subject and last, the tenses
them what it is? (F) in each sentence. It would be a whole class activity, they can just shout out the answers.
After that, I would elicit 2 students to come and write the pattern on the board: the
structure for the If clause and the one for the main clause.
