A storm destroyed their house -> their house was destroyed (by a storm)
Betekenis van de zin verandert niet, de nadruk wordt alleen ergens anders op gezet. In de
bedrijvende zin voert het onderwerp van de zin de handeling uit. In een lijdende zin ondergaat het
onderwerp de handeling.
Zin 1: nadruk op wie verantwoordelijk is voor de actie -> de storm
Zin 2: nadruk op de actie -> namelijk dat het huis verwoest is (door wie/wat is al duidelijk uit de
context of niet belangrijk)
Gebruik van de lijdende vorm (passive)
1. Als niet duidelijk is wie het onderwerp van de zin is
My camera was stolen from my locker at school.
2. Het overduidelijk is wat het onderwerp van de zin is (uit de context of in dit geval de politie)
The murderer has been arrested
3. Als het niet uitmaakt wie de actie uitvoert, de nadruk ligt op de actie zelf.
A candle will be lit at the memorial service for the fallen soldier.
Stappenplan:
1. In welke tijd staat de bedrijvende zin?
2. Lijdend voorwerp van de actieve zin wordt onderwerp van de lijdende zin
-> wie/wat + onderwerp + gezegde
3. Voeg een vorm van ‘to be’ toe
4. Gebruik het hoofdwerkwoord uit de actieve zin om een voltooid deelwoord te maken voor de
lijdende zin
