a. How did people in the olden days prior formal education, transfer
knowledge and skills to their children? Support your answers with
relevant examples.
Riddles: They help children to gain confidence. They teach the learners about their
environment, e.g. I riddle you with a plant that is found in the environment that stays
green forever; the answer is an aloe. I riddle you with a bird that is disowned by the
bird’s family and also disowned by the rat family: the answer is the bard. Riddles help
learners to be aware of their environment. Riddles help children to gain vocabulary.
Riddles help learners to think deeply. Riddles are used to while away time; they are
also used to entertain.
Folktales: Folktales are educational; they help the learners to order the events
chronologically; they help them gain their confidence when narrating; Folktales contain
the history and culture of the people. Folktales teach learners about their history and
origin. Folktales are used to entertain the young ones.
Proverbs: Proverbs embellish the language, e.g Intandani ehle ngekhothwa ngunina.
It is much better to have your mother than to have your father. In most cases, fathers
are not caring and they are easily convinced by new partners. Proverbs can be used
as titles of literary work, e.g.; Alikho iqili elazikhotha ngemhlana; the title exposes the
unwitty actions of the main character. Proverbs are use to encourage, discourage,
motivate, warn about danger, etc. Khamba juba bayokuhlutha phambili; kotjhatjha
akulilwa kulilwa komrhali. Inja iyawaqeda amanzi ngomlomo. Abentwana bomuntu
