Lesson 12
1. Jordan and Cristina know you are familiar with the role of the 9-1-1 dispatcher. They have
asked you to write a brief summary. This summary should describe the type of information you
would gather as a 9-1-1 dispatcher on a call about the recent theft of all physical evidence from
the police station.
Write a brief summary (100–150 words) for Jordan and Cristina, imagining you were a 9-1-1
dispatcher for this call.
What questions in general would you ask the caller?
The questions in general that I would ask the caller is the nature of the emergency and the
location. They would ask what’s happening in the moment and for descriptions. I would ask for
their call back number and name and the number of people affected and their conditions.
Asking if weapons are involved is a dispatchers job along with giving victims instructions to
safety till an officer arrives. In the Jordan and Christina case things like the instructions for
safety wouldn’t be needed. For Jordan and Christina’s case I would ask the caller what was
stolen, what time it was stolen, their name, number and location.

the police station.
Write a brief summary (100–150 words) for Jordan and Cristina, imagining you were a 9-1-1
dispatcher for this call.
What questions would you ask about the stolen physical evidence?
What I would ask about the stolen evidence and what each piece of evidence was. I’d ask where
all of the items were located, I’d also ask whose it was and the significance of it. I’d ask if anyone
has any accusations who it’d be. I’d ask the caller what the room looked like after the incident,
messy with traces or clean with nothing. I’d ask how much value was in the items stolen. I’d ask
if any windows, doors or locks were broken. I would also ask for the time frame when the stuff
started to go missing.

Mandy volunteered in a month-long sleep study at the university last year. She was asked to
participate because of her unusual sleep habits and neurological history. Part of the sleep study
included her sleeping in a room inside the lab for the entire month. She was videotaped while
she slept.
Now, 13 months later, police are trying to charge Mandy with possession and use of illegal
drugs. It turns out she was using drugs during her stay at the sleep lab. Her drug use was
recorded in the lab videos. She's not sure how or why police saw the videos. She knew she was
being videotaped, although she was told it was only for the study and that no one outside the
lab would view the footage.
Would the video evidence be helpful to proving the case? (Answer in one to two sentences.
Explain your reasoning.)
I think the video evidence would be helpful to proving the case. I think it would prove their point
about Mandy and show what she’s been doing.
Should the video evidence be admissible in this case? Why or why not? (Answer in one to two
sentences. Explain your reasoning.)
I think the video evidence should be admissible in this case because it is really useful evidence.
Are there technical problems with the video evidence? What about other valid objections to the
video? If so, what are they and how could they be overcome? (Answer in one to two sentences.
Explain your reasoning.)
If there were a technical problem with the video it should be fine if it’s minor and not edited to
fix. The other valid objection could be that she was told no one outside the lab would be looking
at the footage.
