CARE OF
YOUR BACK.
THEORY
WORKBOOK.
NAME: Megan Royle GROUP: Caraway

TUTOR: Giuliana Costa
COHORT: Adult Nursing

, INTRODUCTION

Moving and Handling is a key aspect of nursing practice. This workbook

has been designed to replace the “Care of Your Back” session, which

you appear to have not fully completed/attended. It will enable you to

develop a broad understanding of the theory underpinning safer moving

and handling practices at work and throughout life.

All sections of this book must be completed, and discussed with your

Tutor, if necessary. This workbook must be completed before

commencement of your practice placement. Failure to complete all

sections of the workbook and receive feedback from the ‘Care of Your

Back’ Lecturer may result in your being withdrawn from clinical

placement.

There are a variety of activities contained within this workbook. Some

necessitate a list type answer whilst some require a more detailed

explanation. A literature search will have to be undertaken by you to

identify pertinent reference material.

, Activity 1:

b) Name the characteristics of vertebrae and describe their function.

1. Cervical- The function of the cervical vertebrae is to provide support for the
weight of your head. It is the first 7 vertebrae making up the spine called C1-
C7. This is based at the neck. They protect the spinal cord by surrounding it
whilst also allowing your head to move in different directions.

2. Thoracic- The function of the thoracic vertebrae is to support the mid back
including your chest and abdomen. It consists of twelve vertebrae known as
T1-T12. The thoracic spine helps stabilize the rib cage. And the rib cage then
helps stabilize the thoracic spine. This ultimately protects your heart and
lungs.

3. Lumbar- The function of the lumbar vertebrae is to provide stability to the back
and spinal column. This consist of five vertebrae called L1-L5. The lumbar
region takes on the most stress due to it being the centre of your body’s
balance therefore it supports most of your body’s weight. lifting or carrying can
likely result in individuals suffering back pain in the lower back.

4. Sacrum and Coccyx- The function of the sacrum is to connect the hips on both
sides. You will find it located at the base of the lumbar. It consists of five
vertebrae known as S1-S5. These vertebrae are fused together with the hip
bones, which is called the pelvic girdle. Overall, the sacrum vertebrae stabilise
and strengthen the pelvis. The coccyx is a piece of bone made up of four
fused vertebrae. Its main function is to provide attachment for muscles,
ligaments and tendons of the pelvic floor which provides weight-bearing
support in the seated position.
