Lab 5 – Surface Hardening and Strain Rate Sensitivity of Ductile and Brittle Fracture of Polymer Materials
Student Name: Caleb Bulthuis Student No: 101078651 Date: November 26, 2018
Lab Group/Group Members: Mackenzie Bauer, Matthew Jurgutis, Damon Kral
1. Summary
The purpose of this laboratory was to observe how surface hardening a SAE 1045 steel sample affects the
hardness, as well as observing the tensile behavior and properties of brittle and tensile polymers. The lab
began with conducting hardness tests on surface hardened and as-received steels. The microstructure of
three SAE 1045 samples, quenched, tempered and air-cooled, and as-received, were observed based on
given photographs and microscope images taken during the lab. The lab group then went and observed
tensile tests of two polymers, acrylic and polycarbonate, during high speed and low speed tests.
