World War One, also known as the Great War, was a global conflict that
lasted from 1914 to 1918. It involved the major powers of Europe, as
well as other nations from around the world, and had a significant
impact on the political, social, and economic landscape of the 20th
century.

The origins of the war can be traced back to the complex system of
alliances and rivalries that had developed among the major powers of
Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Germany, which had
become a major industrial and military power in the decades leading up
to the war, was seen as a threat by its neighbors, particularly France and
Russia. In response, France and Russia formed an alliance, while
Germany formed its own alliance with Austria-Hungary. This system of
alliances created a situation where any conflict between two powers
could quickly escalate into a wider war involving multiple nations.

The immediate trigger for the war was the assassination of Archduke
Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in June 1914 by a Serbian
nationalist. Austria-Hungary, backed by Germany, responded with an
ultimatum to Serbia, which was rejected. Austria-Hungary then declared
war on Serbia, and the chain reaction of alliances began to take effect.
Russia mobilized to defend Serbia, which led Germany to declare war on
Russia. France, allied with Russia, also mobilized, and Germany declared
war on France. Britain, which had guaranteed the independence of
Belgium, which Germany had invaded, declared war on Germany.

The early stages of the war saw a series of rapid and sweeping military
movements, known as the "War of Movement." However, by the end of
1914, the front lines had stabilized, and a long and bloody war of
attrition began. The Western Front, where the German army faced off
against the British and French, became a massive system of trenches
and fortifications, stretching from the English Channel to the Swiss
border. Conditions in the trenches were terrible, with soldiers facing
disease, exposure, and constant danger from enemy fire.

The war saw the use of new and devastating weapons, including poison
gas, tanks, and aircraft. The first use of poison gas by the Germans in
April 1915 marked a new low in the brutality of the war. The gas caused
severe respiratory problems and could be fatal within minutes. The use
of tanks, first deployed by the British in 1916, allowed for breakthroughs
in the static trench warfare and became an important part of modern
warfare.

The war also had a significant impact on the home front. The massive
mobilization of troops and resources meant that civilian populations had
to adapt to new conditions of scarcity and hardship. Women took on new
