that it oversimplifies. But if it is good theory, what is omitted is outweighed by the beam of
light and understanding thrown over the diverse facts.
Properly understood, therefore, theory and observation, deduction and induction, will not
be in conflict. The test of a theory’s validity is its usefulness in illuminating observed reality.
