, Question 1:
The knowledge we pass on through generations is a very important part of who we
are and an interesting way to do this is by using inanimate objects or animals in
stories to make it fun and relatable to kids. Using this technique is great, because
animal stories are filled with wisdom that can be articulated in a coherent and
understandable way for us to pass on our experiences form one generation to the
next. I chose the Zulu example of a folktale “Izikweletu ezingazange
zikhokhelwe”, that teaches us a moral lesson about unpaid debts.
This folktale is about a donkey, a dog and a goat that went on a trip by foot and
decided to ask for a lift. They claimed they could pay the owner of the car, so they
got a lift. When they reached their destination they donkey paid in full, the dog
paid but waited for his change and the goat ran away without paying. The owner of
the car was very annoyed and drove away fast, so the dog chased after it for his
change. From that day, dogs chase after cars, goats flee when they see a car and
donkeys remain put when a car approaches.
This folktale has been adapted to fit our modern lifestyle, thus things such as
money and cars are present, but the theme is still the same and we can still learn
the same things from this folktale. The moral of this story is that if you do what
you said you were going to do then you don’t have to feel guilty just like the
donkey that doesn’t move when it sees the car, because it knows that it doesn’t
owe anything. The goat runs away from a car every time, because it feels guilty,
this shows that if you don’t do what you say you will (you don’t stick to your word)
you will feel guilty for the rest of your life and it will follow you every where you
go. This folktale teaches us that untrustworthiness can control our lives and that if
you are trustworthy, you will live carefree because you won’t have to worry or feel
guilty about things.
We could also learn from this folktale that our actions like being untrustworthy,
could affect others in such a way that it changes their lives and could control their
lives in a bad way, just like the dog that didn’t receive its’ change so it never stops
chasing after cars when it sees one, just because the goat decided not to pay what
it promised. Sometimes we don’t realise that our actions can cause ripple effects
that affects the lives of people around us. We can decide if we affect people’s
lives in a good or bad way.
