AC 1.2 – Explain the reasons that certain crimes go unreported.

Personal Reasons:
Fear - Victim may fear potential consequences from the criminal, further abuse.
Not affected - If an incident does not concern a person, then they may feel it has
nothing to do with them and that they should leave it to someone else to report.
Shame - Embarrassment, especially if it’s a sexual abuse/rape. The person might
not want others to know they are vulnerable and unable to ‘defend’ themselves.
Disinterest – Some people do not always care about what has happened or feel
upset about the crime committed.
Social and Cultural Reasons
Lack of knowledge – The public may not realise that something that happened is
a crime, so nothing is reported.
Complexity – The public may not understand that a crime has been committed as
it is too difficult to understand/follow.
Lack of media interest – Some crimes are not widely reported by the media as
they believe there will be little to no public interest.
Culture-bound crime – This can be seen as acceptable in certain sections of
society. Honour killings are accepted in some cultures or religions as they follow
traditions.
Lack of public concern – This may occur if an offence is not considered an actual
crime. Downloading illegal music is something that many people do. There is no
real concern about the act.
