Unit 1: Assignment 3
The heart, blood flow, blood composition, blood vessel structure, blood vessels, neural control of the heart and thermoregulation.
Submitted for my BTEC assignment and achieved a Distinction.
The heart has four chambers, the left and right atrium, and the left and right ventricles. The
walls of the heart are made up of three layers.
Endocardium – this is the innermost layer of heart tissue; therefore it lines the cavities & the
chambers of the heart. It is composed of loose connective tissue and simple squamous epithelial
tissue. The Endocardium regulates the contractions of the heart, aids cardiac development, and
may regulate the composition of the blood that feeds the tissues of the heart.
Myocardium - this is composed of cardiac muscle and is located between the Epicardium and
Endocardium. It is responsible for the contractions of the heart, which occur without conscious
thought. These contractions allow blood to enter the atria and pump blood out of the ventricles.
Epicardium – this layer is located on the outside of the heart. A continuous piece of muscle, this
tissue performs a protective role, helping hold the other muscles close together. The heart is
responsible for pumping blood through the blood vessels, causing it to circulate throughout the
body.
