• Born October 14, 1894 and died September 3, 1962.
• American poet and painter who first attracted attention, in an age of lite
experimentation, for his unconventional punctuation and phrasing.
• As part of his linguistic experiments, Cummings invented complex words
used inverted syntax. He used different text alignments, irregular line
spacing, and nontraditional capitalization to emphasize particular words
phrases.
• His distinctive typography was often matched with his subject matter
because his moods alternated between satire and toughness and tende
