SOCIAL INFLUENCE- CONFORMITY EXPLANATIONS -
There are different types of conformity:
Compliance – People may publicly go along with the norm of a group but
privately disagree (not long lasting)
Identification – Going along with the group because you want to been seen as
this group, you believe the norms are correct but beliefs are temporary
Internalisation – The person goes along with the group norm even when the
group isn’t there. Beliefs are also permanent and this tends to happen with
religion

accepted by the group so they don’t want to be disapproved. This can link to
compliance with public agree and privately disagree
Informational social influence – Conforming because people want to be seen
doing the right thing. Happens especially in new situations where people
aren’t sure how to behave (believe the group is correct). Involves adopting
beliefs because of your own uncertainty so these beliefs can turn into long
lasting
