1. Describe the major points of Kamehameha I's campaign. Include information (dates,
names, significance) about the following:

Some of the major points of King Kamehameha I’s campaign included wars. The Battle of
Moku’ohai occurred in the year of 1782 and was on the island of Hawaii. The significance of this
battle is that is was a key battle, if the King won this battle it would be his first step in conquering
the Hawaiian islands. This battle also solidified his leadership over the island of Hawaii.
Kiwalaʻō was an Ali’i on the island of Hawaii and died when he lost to King Kamehameha in
battle in 1782. Keōua was an important in the King's campaign because that was his father.
Kahekili was the King of Maui. His actions almost led to the destruction of his land. Kahekili was
a chief who was in control of majority of the Hawaiian islands except for the island of Hawaii.
When Kahekili died 1794, it led to the weakening of his army. This eventually led up to King
Kamehameha conquering the island of Maui. Shortly after, King Kamehameha conquered the
island of Oahu by defeating Kahekili’s army in the Battle of Nu’uanu Pali that took place in the
year of 1795. The last island to conquer was the island of Kauai but the chief of that island
made a mutual obligation with the King which led to the unifying of all the Hawaiian islands in
the year 1810. These were the major points of King Kamehameha's campaign.

2. Identify and describe the major events/changes that occurred under each of the
monarchs (the terms below are titles, don't forget to include their actual names in your
descriptions):

Kamehameha II was the King that ruled Hawaii after the death of Kamehameha I in 1819. His
name was Kamehameha Liholiho and he remained in power from 1819-1824. Liholiho was
responsible for the rise of Kuhina Nui. He also broke ‘aikapu in the year 1819. Also in 1819 was
the Battle of Kuamoʻo. In the Battle of Kuamoʻo Liholiho defeated Kekuaokalani in their dispute
over Liholiho breaking ‘aikapu. King Liholiho and his wife died of measles in London in 1824.




King Kamehameha III was in rule after the death of Liholiho. His name was Kamehameha
Kauikeaouli. Kauikeaouli remained in power from 1825-1854. He became the king of the islands
at just 11 years old. In 1840 Kauikeaouli was responsible of the creation of a new constitution

, which totally changed government structure in Hawaii. It was also the first constitution
established in Hawaii. The 1840 constitution created a bicameral parliament, which included a
House of Nobles and representatives. In 1843 this is where Kauikeaouli secures recognition of
the Kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands by Britain, France as an independent Nation. This led to
treaties other nations and established November 28th as the Hawaiian independence day. In
1848 the land system changed from communal to private property. The Hawaiians lost all their
land to foreigners and only had 10% remaining from themselves. In the year 1854, the
Declaration of Neutrality was signed.

Kamehameha IV (King Alexander Liholiho) was the king to follow. King Alexander Liholiho held
power from 1854-1863. He was the grandson of Kamehameha I. King Alexander Liholiho made
many strives to preserve the Hawaiian Sovereignty. King Alexander had much American v.
British influence in his kingdom. He was a benevolent man, offering free medical care to those
who were diseased and was responsible for the building of Queen’s Hospital. During the Civil
war King Alexander prevented produce sugar and import sugar from Hawaiʻi, which led to
Hawaii’s sugar boom. King Alexander Liholiho dies in 1863 at the age of 29.

Kamehameha V was the king to follow after King Alexander Liholiho in the year 1863. His name
was Lot Kapuaiwa and maintained power from 1863-1872. He was King Alexander Liholiho’s
brother. King Lot Kapuaiwa was responsible for establishing a new constitution in 1864. This
constitution removed the office of Kuhina Nui and combined the two houses into one
Legislature. King Lot Kapuaiwa lifted the bans of Hula and traditional medicine. In 1872 King Lot
Kapuaiwa died without an heir to his spot of power.
