The biopsychosocial factors in caring for individuals including legal,

professional and ethical aspects of care

The biopsychosocial model consists of 3 elements known as the biological,

psychological and social factors relating to Jack who has undergone surgery due to

a fractured distal tibia and suffers from various mental health issues. The

biopsychosocial model of health focusses on the biology, psychology and social

factors affecting Jack’s health and well-being. The importance of this assignment is

to identify how professionalism, the law and ethics impact on the delivery of safe

nursing practice. Furthermore, this assignment will also recognise and discuss

appropriate communication strategies to maximise engagement and empowerment

in health promotion and prevention of ill health.

Jack who is 13 years old has a fractured distal tibia which is a break in the fibula

bone causing it to be fractured (Wu, 2017). However, the average healing process

for a fractured distil tibia is 3-6 months (Childrenshospital.org, 2019), which means

Jack will experience reduced movement in his leg preventing him to undergo daily

activities such as walking and doing things he enjoys such as skateboarding. This

will result in a lack of movement meaning Jack will not be able to participate in

physical education at school, therefore the biological impact may affect Jacks

physical health as he will have a lack of exercise. Moreover, the biological change

may influence how Jack feels about himself which can have a negative impact on his

psychological and social well-being. Furthermore, Jack smokes 5-10 cigarettes per

day which has an impact on Jack’s health as he suffers from asthma, therefore if

, Jack continuous to smoke, he may be at risk of serious lung conditions such as

chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (Asthma UK, 2019).

Jack may go through many psychological changes such as decreased self-esteem

as he is not able to skateboard anymore which has a negative effect on his social

interactions as he will not be able to socialise with his friends which can have an

emotional impact on Jack. Furthermore, Jack is socially isolating himself and has

become withdrawn, which is due to Jacks environmental circumstances. For

example, Jack has a single parent who leaves him for long periods of the day and

night. This has an impact on Jack’s social well-being as he doesn’t receive enough

attention and support from his mother, resulting in social isolation.

Jack suffers from depression and discloses he has suicidal thoughts which can result

from a number of factors. For example, Jack may feel alone due to his injury and his

Mother always working, which shows that Jack has a weak relationship with his

Mother. Therefore, Jack may use self-harm as well as smoking as a coping

mechanism for his emotional and physical pain which he is experiencing from the

tibial fracture surgery. As Jack is unable to socialise with his friends due to his injury,

he may feel depressed which can have a negative impact on Jack’s mental health as

he may find it difficult to cope without his friends, which affects his social interactions.

Jack’s change in social behaviour has had a knock-on effect on his emotional state

as he is having suicidal thoughts which has led Jack to self-harm. Furthermore, as a

nurse it makes it challenging to overcome certain barriers such as effectively

communicating with jack as he shows behaviour such as social isolation.
