Section A - BIOL201 Biochemistry (answer all five questions)
1. Produce a diagram to summarise the key reactions of the pyruvate dehydrogenase
complex.
2. Draw a diagram to illustrate André Jagendorf’s experiment which demonstrated
chemiosmosis in chloroplasts.
3. How is the activity of phosphofructokinase controlled?
4. Describe briefly the structure of E. coli aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase) and
state how the activity of this enzyme is regulated.
5. How is fatty acid biosynthesis regulated by acetyl-CoA carboxylase?
Section B - BIOL201 Biochemistry (answer one question only)
6. Give an account of H+ pumping by complex I and complex III in the respiratory chain.
Comment on how the mechanisms differ in these complexes.
7. Compare and contrast the pathways of glycolysis and gluconeogenesis and the
mechanisms of their regulation.
8. Describe the complete oxidation of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids to CO2 and
H2O.
