Comparative ethics essay plan.

Question of focus: Attempt an examination of African normative ethics, revealing its strengths and
weaknesses.

Key word: examination

Aim of the essay is to not only to describe and analyse the African Ethics, but to also make an
evaluation of positive’s and negatives found both with philosophers and myself.

Introduction:

To explain what normative ethics in general is before delving into what type of ethics is African
ethics.

Normative ethics: a branch of moral philosophy concern with setting the criteria for what is right and
wrong. It concerns itself with setting guidelines on how me should live our lives to be moral people.

African ethics focuses on communitarianism, as opposed to western individualism suggested in the
consequentialism and deontology.

It is a character-based ethics, and may link with the Aristotelian virtue ethics, minus the focus on the
doctrine of the mean.

The division between supernaturalism and humanism (a weakness) which causes, in my opinion, a
lean more towards the humanistic perspective.

P1: African ethics and communitarianism.

Communitarianism emphasises the connection between individuals and other members of their
community. A community can extend from the family, for instance neighbours, church community,
people with a shared history and experience and even people sharing the same geographical
location.

‘A person is a person through other person’s’

This is a positive for the theory as it emphasises the fact that through others, we grow.

We can link this quote we the means of reproduction. Due to close communal ties, to people may
decide to get married and have a child. Harmonious communities can lead to reproduction.

Gyekye’s modern communitarianism- actions are right insofar as they promote the common good
without treating people’s dignity disrespectfully in the process.

Links to the humanity formulation of Kant’s categorical imperative, but instead of individualism in
terms of rights and autonomy, the African ethics is more about care.

Ubuntu 6: An action is right just insofar as it produces harmony and reduces discord: an action is
wrong to the extent that it fails to develop communion.

Strength- identifies that we are who we are due to who we are in contact with etc.

P2: It is a character-based ethics
