C.P4 – Explain the benefits of adaptations and support provided to one child and one adult with
different additional needs.
In this assignment, I will explain the benefits of modifications and assistance offered to Rebecca
Brown and Ben Grace, both of whom have special needs. When modifications and assistance are
made available to an individual with special needs, they get a sense of independence and their
quality of life improves. Special communication and assistive technology are essential for persons
with special needs to carry out everyday duties and feel included in society. An adaption is a
modification made to your house to make it more accessible and safer for individuals with
disabilities. Those who have home adaptations will find it safer and simpler to move about and do
daily duties. Local councillors provide a service in which they examine the residence and provide
recommendations for improvements. It might be difficult to provide adjustments depending on
where the individual is staying/living, whether the residence is large or little. For example, if you live
in a tiny house, it would be difficult to install a bannister on the stairs. However, if the individual is
experiencing difficulties with their mobility, creating a walk-in shower or adding a set of grab bars to
aid with getting in and out of the bath. Special equipment and communication aids are essential for
persons with special needs to do everyday chores, live independently, and feel more integrated in
society.
Child Case study – Rebecca Brown
Occupational therapist treats disabled, ill or injured patients with special equipment and the
therapeutic use of daily activities. They help patients improve regain and develop the skills needed
for day to day life and work. They may provide long-term patients care and acute patients/
Occupational therapist will work with Rebecca and help her adapt to her physical disability. They will
teach her how to perform activities of daily activities. Rebecca Brown, who is eight years old and
uses a wheelchair, was wounded in a vehicle accident when she was five years old. Rebecca's
adaptations should allow her to live comfortably in her house. The adaptation is often centred on six
key sections of the flat in which her family is now residing: the living room, kitchen, bedroom, and
bathroom, where the primary alterations that may be made to allow complete disability access and
independent living. Rebecca's spine is shattered; therefore, she can't move below her cervical spine.
Injuries to the spinal cord are irreparable. Paraplegia is caused by damage to the spinal cord at or
below the level of the chest, and it limits a person's ability to use their legs. When a person sustains
an accident that causes paraplegia. Rebecca may also endure urinary and faecal incontinence,
problems with body temperature control, and persistent discomfort. She would be cared for at
home due to her paraplegia. Pressure-relieving beds and pads, hoists and other transfer aids to
assist changing position, motorised or manually operated wheelchairs, ramps, incontinence pads,
reaches (to help them reach/pick up tiny objects), grasp rails, and dressing aids are all available to
support their care. In addition to mobility, a suitable wheelchair improves the physical health quality
of life of users by assisting in the reduction of frequent issues such as pressure sores, the
advancement of deformities, and the improvement of breathing and digestion. The usage of a
wheelchair allows the user to move around and do everyday tasks without help. Because the family's
financial situation would make it impossible for them to afford an electric wheelchair, the manual
wheelchair provides greater flexibility for the user and their care. A wheelchair can lessen the danger
and worry of failing at home or in the outdoors, allowing you to move around more confidently.
Wheelchairs are particularly built to fit into and manoeuvre through small spaces, making them
perfect for usage in the house. Rebecca lives in a flat with stairs, so both of her parents would have
to hold the wheelchair to get her up as the flat isn't built to be accessible. Rebecca would be able to
use stairlifts if the flat had them since they are quick and easy to operate.
, Rebecca's family will require financial assistance, which will most likely take the form of state
benefits. The government website has specific information regarding the amount that an individual
may claim. Welfare rights imply that a person has the right to know what benefits they are entitled
to and to get those benefits. Rebecca's family is eligible for housing aid since their income is below a
specific level. Housing benefits will cover expenses such as rent. The amount received by the father
and mother is determined by their income and personal circumstances. Because both parents earn
low earnings, the family is eligible for housing assistance.
Rebecca's limitation of mobility will necessitate the use of a wheelchair or a mobility scooter. This
will necessitate the installation of lifts, a level threshold, ground floor accommodations, ramps, and
enlarged doorways with sliding doors. The advantages of having these wheelchair adaptations are
that they can move around more freely and do not have to strain to climb stairs, allowing them to
feel more confident in accessing buildings independently. Other modifications that could be
implemented include turning the bathroom to a full wet room with ample space for the wheelchair.
They can also replace carpets with laminate, short pile carpet, wood, or vinyl flooring to improve
movement throughout the property. If a blue badge is not already in place, the family should seek
for one to make her feel more integrated in society. Local governments administer the blue badge
scheme for registered disabled individuals. It may be utilised by the registered user. Individuals who
display their blue badge are entitled to park in disabled parking bays, which are typically located
near the main entrances of shops, businesses, health and leisure centres, and other structures. A
parking bay outside the residence of a person classified as having mobility disability can be
requested from the local council. Rebecca will feel a lot more confident/independent and
comfortable living in her own house and going out to participate in activities with these adjustments
made to her home and having the blue badge, which will be advantageous for her as she grows
older. These improvements may also help Rebecca's family acquire confidence in their ability to
support Rebecca in carrying out the activities of daily living that she desires.
Physiotherapist work to diagnose the cause of injury and put together a treatment plan, sometimes
including exercises, manual therapy. They also advise on managing long term conditions.
Physiologists will be able to help Rebecca through movement and exercise, manual therapy,
education and advice. Physiotherapy will be beneficial for Rebecca because she will be advised on
what she should not
The Public Service Vehicles Accessibility Regulations 2000 (PSVAR) govern public transportation
accessibility. Rebecca and her family are permitted to use public transportation because the buses
have access ramps for wheelchair users and space has been made available on the bus. People with
wheelchairs are given priority at peak hours. In addition, if Rebecca's family want to use a cab, there
will be an accessible ramp. The majority of licenced black cabs have ramps installed.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who diagnose and treat medical illnesses. They often employ
individual or group therapy to gain insight into a patient past and find coping methods to help
patients address their own problems. Psychiatrists can assess whether Rebecca has mental health
issues because she was involved in a traumatic road traffic accident when she was 5 yeas old,
therefore she might have underlying mental health issues which may not have been diagnosed such
as post traumatic stress disorder. For Rebecca a child psychiatrist would be more effective as a child
psychiatrist is a doctor who specialises in diagnosing a treating behavioural and thought disorder in
children. A child psychiatrist uses their knowledge on many factors including biological and
psychological factors, in order to devise a treatment plan for a child with behaviour and thought
disorders. This support provided by this professional will benefit Rebecca in the long run because if
