Notes:

 ‘miserable in the separation’ ‘solitary’ – the consequences of isolation.
 ‘my eyes inflamed by watching and misery’ – ‘inflamed’, huge internal conflict, as if he is
being tortured in his own personal hell.
 ‘refreshed me’ – sleep rejuvenates him, connotes new beginnings and reflection, ‘I belonged
to a race of human beings’ – unlike the creature he is still not an outsider, despite his odious
actions.
 ‘like a death-knell…distinct and oppressive’ – he is being oppressed and trapped by his own
actions and because of the power shift between the creature and Frankenstein.
 ‘chemical instruments…odious work…sickening to me’ – disregarding life.
 ‘almost felt as if I had mangled a living flesh of a human being’ – he did destroy a life but
because he believes that the creatures are inhumane he doesn’t see them as worth the title
of human. He also destroys everything about women – women are passive and oppressed.
 ‘my eyes…for the first time, saw clearly’ – finally, he is being just a little bit intelligent but
this probably won’t last long.
 ‘basest and most atrocious selfishness’ – only because it was a female.
 ‘dreadful crime’ – showing his face after the crimes he did against humanity seems a crime.
 ‘the moon rose’ ‘took advantage of the moment of darkness’ – like the creature when he
sets the cottage of fire, Frankenstein wants the moon to be covered over so it cannot see
him and his sins.
 ‘cast my basket in the sea’ – by throwing the creature in the sea it is as if he is throwing
away his sins and guilty burdens.
 ‘slept soundly’ – he doesn’t have a guilty conscious as if all of his sins are wiped away.
 ‘torment of a burning thirst’ ‘the boat would be instantly filled with water’– like the Ancient
Mariner, because he committed an act against God he is being punished.
 ‘I had no compass’ – he is literally and metaphorically lost, he has no moral compass, but
also he’s a complete idiot.
 Heavens, which were covered by clouds’ – he is being rejected by heaven because of his
transgressions against nature, man and God.
 ‘It was to be my grave’ – if only we are lucky.
 ‘like a warm flood of warm joy to my heart’ ‘how mutable are our feelings’ – Shelley
commenting on how we a s humans are so susceptible to our feelings.
 ‘wild rocky appearance’ – foreshadowing, much?
 ‘extreme debility’ – like the Mariner and every time he commits a transgression/sin he
becomes physically ill.
 Even when in a pickle he always has money on him, emphasizes the difference between
Frankenstein and the creature.
 ‘instead of offering me any assistance’ – because he looks a bit rough people do not
welcome him, finally getting a taste of his own medicine, assuming that people would attend
to him and love him.
 ‘I was innocent’ – nope.
