Unit 6 Learning Aim A
EXPLAIN HOW WORK EXPERIENCE CAN SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF OWN PROFESSIONAL
SKILLS AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES FOR WORK IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE SECTOR
In this unit, I will be looking at the skills and attributes required to provide adequate health and
social care. A skill is the ability to do something well and an attribute is a quality that contributes to
your personal identity. These skills are usually learnt within the workplace, making work experience
crucial as it gives a taste of the job as well as starting the development of personal skills. An example
of the skills and attributes needed are; communication skills, the ability to decision make, honesty
and integrity.
Reflecting on own Skills and Attributes and Areas for Development
It is important to reflect upon personal attributes before going into a work experience environment,
as once weaker areas are identified, they can be developed and worked on. In order to effectively
reflect, conscious thought about a previous incident or event needs to be applied, as this allows for
the event to be learnt from. This means considering why it was a success, if it was a success, and
how can that success be repeated in the future. If the event didn’t go well then it could also be
reflected upon, as different variables could be changed until the desired outcome is reached.
Furthermore, reflecting allows for a deeper understanding as to why certain things and processes
are done in certain ways.
Developing Professionalism
To be professional means to comply with the standards set by the workplace and by regulatory
bodies [1]. These standards include punctuality, regular attendance and acting responsibly. Work
experience helps to develop these skills as they will be displayed by those working alongside. If a
there isn't a level of professionalism, there are consequences which include being suspended or
fired, depending on the severity of the infringement.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
Listening, speaking and writing are all communication skills that allow for the exchange of
information with others. Good communication skills are needed when completing work experience
as by effectively communicating with service users and their families, positive relationships can be
formed. This allows a foundation of trust to be built, which is crucial within the health and social care
sector. Communication also allows for positive relationships to be formed with other colleagues and
professionals. If communication isn't properly used then the relaying of information could go wrong
and be inaccurate, which could possibly lead to a patient receiving the wrong care. This could lead to
a healthcare professional losing their job.
Interpersonal skills are used to interact and communicate face to face with others. This means that it
isn't just about the words being spoke, but also the tone of voice, body language and facial
expressions used.
Organisational Skills
One organisation skill is time management. Having good time management allows for tasks to be
finished within a certain timeframe. This includes prioritising tasks and working in a manner that is
effective, such as combining tasks that can be done at once. Time can also be affectively managed
through the use of lists, as these allow for all questions to be asked at once, saving time for
everyone.
