EXPLAIN OWN RESPONSIBILITIES AND LIMITATIONS ON WORK EXPERIENCE PLACEMENT

Preparation for Work Experience

Make sure travel arrangements are made for work placement and allow plenty of time for traffic, as
turning up late to work experience is unprofessional and doesn’t set a good first impression. Ensure
that any introductory information is read through thoroughly and you know where and who to
report to.

Dress

The first thing people see is your appearance and how you are dressed. Before starting work
experience, you should find out the dress code for the establishment to ensure that you are dressed
appropriately. Makeup should be natural and jewellery should be kept to the minimum. Clothes
should be clean and smart, as well as suitable to the role. Hair should also be kept clean and tidy and
in some settings, it is required to be tied up away from the face and neck. This is to protect yourself,
as it could be pulled or get caught on machinery.

Behaviour

Behaving appropriately whilst on placement is important. You should be polite and respectful, and
carry out all tasks that are asked of you, no matter how trivial, as everybody has to start somewhere.
Take criticism as help for improvement and try to develop conversation between both the service
user and provider. Once all tasks are complete, use initiative to start other jobs, such as tidying up.
Ensure that you are not gossiping about others, don’t make a fuss when asked to a small task and
make a fuss if you are asked to do something that you feel is inappropriate or that makes you
uncomfortable.

Disclosure and Barring Service

The Disclosure and Barring Service check is the new name for the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)
check. If someone is applying for a job, whether it is paid or voluntary, which involves, for example,
health care or working with children or vulnerable adults, or applying to foster or adopt a child, it is a
legal requirement that they apply for a DBS check. The employer will ask for one to be carried out on
your behalf if it is deemed to be necessary. The process involves completing an application form at
the request of your employer, who will sign it and ask to see certain original documents such as your
birth certificate or passport. The form is sent to the DBS. If the form has been correctly and
accurately completed, and the facts do not raise any alarms, the DBS sends a certificate to the
person who has applied for it. This certificate is shown to the employer to prove that the person has
passed their DBS check. If you are over 16 and there is any chance that you will have unsupervised
access to children or vulnerable adults at your work experience placement, you may be expected to
apply for a DBS check. Similarly, if a work placement supervisor is to have day-to-day responsibility
for you, the school may ask for a DBS check on the supervisor. However, in almost all work
placements this will not happen because the supervisor will not have regular unsupervised contact
with you.

Goals and Objectives

A goal is something that you want to achieve, they can be as small or large as you want them to be.
An objective is more specific than a goal and is structured. It can be attained by taking certain steps
towards it. Often, objectives are set using SMART targets to ensure that they are achievable within a
certain time frame. COME BACK AFTER STARTING WORK EXPERIENCE
