AC 3.3 - Justify a campaign for change

Why There is a Need for My Campaign

I chose to focus on sexual assault because I believe that it should no longer go under-reported, and that
victims and survivors deserve justice for what they have been forced to go through. Sexual assault is
under-reported because of personal reasons such as fear, shame or the concern felt by victims that they
would not be believed by police. The under-reporting of sexual assault is an important area to address
because there are many negative consequences that stem from it. For example, the ripple effect that
comes from the under-reporting of sexual assault will continue to affect millions of victims and society
as a whole, as the stigma surrounding speaking out against sexual assault continues to affect our lives.
On a more technical level, the under-reporting of sexual assault contributes to unrecorded crime, the
dark figure of crime, and leads to inaccurate police prioritisation. In the year ending June 2021, the
number of rape offences hit a record high – 61,158. Without my campaign, it is likely that victims will
not be encouraged to speak out against the people who assaulted them, offenders will continue to walk
free and numbers will continue to rise. A prominent example of sexual assault, harassment and abuse is
Harvey Weinstein’s allegations – in October 2017, The New York Times and The New Yorker reported
that, over a period of 30 years, dozens of women had accused Weinstein of sex offences. Since the initial
reporting in 2017, over 80 women have come forward to accuse Weinstein. People saw this as a call to
arms and began to share their stories. My campaign will be successful because it meets my aim of
raising awareness of sexual assault and inspiring others to share their stories without the fear of not
being believed or shamed. I took inspiration from campaigns such as Me Too and Everyone’s Invited.
The success of these campaigns could be used as evidence that mine will also be successful because
sexual assault is a serious problem that will require many societal breakthroughs in order to prevent its
occurrence and the stigma around it.

Why I Chose My Campaign Name and Slogan

I decided upon With The Survivor for my campaign name. I chose this because it is brief, memorable,
and paints people who have experienced sexual assault as survivors rather than victims, which
empowers them to speak out. I decided to create the slogan “Speak Out, We’re With You” to
accompany my campaign because it is succinct, instructive and simplistic – people will quickly
understand the aim of the campaign and act upon it, therefore helping the campaign to be more
successful. It targets my audience because there is no high-level language that young people would be
unable to understand and does not leave room for incorrect interpretation. Furthermore, it assures
victims and survivors of sexual assault that the campaign is there to support them and guide them
through the process of speaking out or even going to the police.

Methods

I chose a range of methods including leaflets, merchandise, social media and an assembly. I chose to
produce a leaflet because it is a simple and cost-effective way to supply people with important
information about the campaign. I included detailed statistics in order to attract the attention of readers
and make people understand the severity of the issue and why the campaign is necessary . My “With The
Survivor” logo is at the top of the leaflet because it aligns the leaflet with the rest of my campaign
materials and will lead to the logo becoming more recognisable. The social media handles of the
campaign are underneath all of the statistics as this is, traditionally, where they fit in the layout of a
