AC 3.1 - Plan a campaign for change

The topic of my campaign is sexual assault. The name of my campaign is With The Survivor. My
slogan is “Speak Out, We’re With You”.

Aims

Aims are what you hope to achieve through your campaign. Aims should focus on the purposes of
your campaign and what you hope to change. Things that can be changed include funding,
awareness, social attitudes, policies and laws. The aims of my campaign are raising awareness of
sexual assault and encouraging victims to speak out, particularly young victims. I selected young
people as my target audience because sexual assault is an issue that many young people fear or
experience, so educating them about it is beneficial.

Objectives

Objectives are how you intend to meet your aims. Objectives should be SMART – Specific,
Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-based. There are three objectives that make up my
campaign. My first objective is to share the campaign with local schools. I will be able to measure
this objective by counting the number of schools that I share information with about the campaign.
This objective is attainable because I will get permission from the headteachers of local schools to
deliver an assembly explaining the campaign and to hand out leaflets. Going into schools is a
relevant objective to the campaign because my target audience is young people. Over the course of
a few weeks to a month, I, or volunteers, would go around and visit all the schools I had been given
permission by. My second objective is to promote the campaign using social media. There will be
three posts a day, with the goal of gaining 1,000 followers within the first month. This objective is
achievable because social media is easy to use and is free to set up. It is relevant to the campaign
because social media is particularly accessible to young people (the target audience). Social media
pages can be set up quickly and can be carried on for a long time, so are flexible within timescales.
My third objective is to sell merchandise. This objective is measurable because I can count the profit
I make from selling products related to the campaign. It is attainable because producing
merchandise is simple if you have the funding to have it professionally made and certain products,
such as tote bags and badges, can be sold cheaply and therefore more people will buy them. Selling
merchandise is relevant to the campaign because it provides free advertisement for the campaign
and gives the campaign a chance to spread out beyond the original target audience and reach a
wider demographic. It is time-based because merchandise can be produced quickly and can keep
being sold as long as there is the funding to produce it.

Justification of Choice of Campaign

I chose to make sexual assault the topic of my campaign because it is an issue close to my heart as I
know many people who are victims. I have experienced catcalling while walking alone – this is just
one form of harassment that women my age and older and younger are forced to deal with. I also
chose this topic because it is frequently talked about in the media but the media perpetrates rape
culture and does not always provide a sensitive and accurate report of these crimes. Sexual assault is
stigmatised and victims do not always come forward because of societal pressures. Fewer than 16%
of people who experienced sexual assault in the last year reported it. In the year ending March 2017,
20% of women and 4% of men in England and Wales experienced sexual assault (equal to 3.4 million
women and 631,000 men). Generally, it is underreported due to personal reasons such as fear and
embarrassment, and social and cultural reasons such as complexity – unless there is physical
evidence, which can normally only be obtained if the victim immediately reports the assault, it is
