My unit 10 assignment 1 requires me to assess the specific activity requirements of two different
outdoor activity and evaluate how activity requirements and personal skills impact on participants in
2 different outdoor activity.
Paragliding is an air-based activity that is a recreational and competitive adventure sport of flying
paragliders. This also requires various requirements before performing it. Firstly, the equipment
needed, before doing any activity, especially air-based activities which include various risks factors.
You will be needing a parachute. Paragliders are instructed to use a parachute in case of an incident.
As well as that when paragliders wear a parachute, they will feel peace of mind and have a better
experience. Alongside that, we will also be needing a harness which will have a reserve parachute
attached to it in case of preventing an aerial incident. A harness is attached to the wing through
baffled cells. The pilot uses the harness to stand or sit and cover long distances. Typically, nowadays
harnesses also work as a backpack so pilots do not have to carry one. Airbag protectors or foam
below the seat provide protection providing failed launch or landing. Next, the most important the
wings also known as ram air airofil in aeronautical engineering. These are two sets of fabric on a wing
that it’s connected in such a way that it forms an internal support material by forming row cells.
Ideally, these wings are made of rips ton polyesters or nylon fabric. With that it important to wear
the correct paraglide/parachute to your level of experience and expertise. The next equipment you
will be needing is lines which are rigging cords attached to different areas of the underside of the
wing. These consist of about four to five rows of lines. Where the last row is the brakes or it could be
the control lines that are attached to the wing’s trailing edge. You will also need a harness as it helps
to reduce the resistance of the wind and potentially keep you warm., additionally, you will need a
helmet, which will provide protection for your head and an integrated chin guard. It is strongly
recommended by experts to use fiberglass or carbon fiber helmets for paragliding. Lastly, you will
need sunglasses or some strong-fit glasses. Initially to protect your eyes. to have the best experience
through this, it is especially important you have the correct specific requirements for the
environment. Not having the correct environment can become a health and safety risk situation
resulting in you not being able to not do it. Firstly, the wind velocity is quite important as if there is
no wind, it will not be possible to fly therefore, the appropriate wind should be less than 18mph or
28 km/h. Secondly, to check the airflow and the direction of the wind. It is much nicer to fly on a
clear day to enjoy the landscapes and views. Following this, you will need to be somewhere high,
mostly conducted on mountains. As you are flying and you need a lot of space. Conducting the right
uniform/clothing is vital. You will be needing boots or ankle supported shoes as you will be walking
through uneven grounds and the weight of the harness, you need to a tight grip to the ground. Other
than boots, what you are required to wear depends on the weather as for Summer you will be
needing long trousers and long-sleeved tops. Even though it might be warm, you will be high up in
the mountains and weather shifts there and the climate is usually colder. Similar for the winter you
will need to wear warm clothing but as it may be extra cold you can wear a tight waterproof warm
coat. Moreover, you will need the correct technology requirements. First you will be needing a
variometer which helps the pilot to gain height and get the location of rising air when he is sinking,
