Explain the difference between a sense of place and place of perception. (4 marks)
A sense of place is the character and atmosphere of a place, this can be determined through
the level of familiarity or identity someone feels within a place as well as the culture,
language, and physical appearance of the place. A place of perception, however, is the
preconcerted information, appearance, or character of a place by outsiders who have not
experienced the place first hand.

Assess two strategies that have led to an increase in food production. (9 marks)
One strategy that has been used to increase food production within the last 100 years can
be seen in the green revolution. The Green revolution was introduced in the 1950s and
consisted of the se of artificial fertilizers and traditional breeding of crops to achieve higher
yields. An example of this can be seen in India where the country was converted into a
modern industrial system by the adoption of technology, such as the use of high yielding
variety (HYV) seeds, mechanised farm tools and irrigation facilities. These methods brought
about by the green revolution led to higher yielding crops and an increase in overall food
production.

Another strategy that has been successful in increasing the level of food production within
the past 100 years can be seen in the gene revolution. The gene revolution is the human
interference with the genes of crops, artificially developing new species of crops that have
higher yields, are pesticide resistant or need less water/soil. As the earth’s climate changes
as a result of climate change, areas of water insecurity and where soil erosion is high are
having to adapt to the new climate by introducing GM crops. An example of a GM crop
which has been successful in increasing the production of food can be seen in IR8, a rice
crop of which the genes have been modified to create higher yields. IR8 was primarily used
in Asia where population growth has been rapid over the past 100 years and their diet
primarily consists of rice. IR8 has improved rice yields by over 2 times more than they were
in the 1950s and has helped to sustain growing populations.

Assess the extent of which lived experiences of people have changed in one place you
have studied. (20 marks)

The lived experience of people in Stratford has changed significantly over the past 20 years
as the area has been changed physically through investment.

In 2012 London was chosen to host the Olympic Games as a result of the Mayor of London
winning the bid for the Olympic Games. The Mayor of London chose Stratford as the host
for the Olympic games as an opportunity to bring investment into the area and develop
through regeneration. Prior to the Olympic Games, Stratford was an area of high financial
and social deprivation it was also an area of high crime and low education rates, so in order
to combat these issues a regeneration project was developed and imposed on the area.

The regeneration project consisted of environmental, social, and economic aims which were
believed to change Stratford’s character. Social aims included new sports and education
facilities to improve the social status of Stratford by improving the levels of health and
education within the area. The sports facilities would also be used for the London Olympic
Games and opened to the public after the Olympics had passed. In addition to this, new
