Situated learning theory by Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger (1991)
According to Lave and Wenger's Situated Learning Theory (1991), learning is most
effective when it occurs in the context in which it is used. Students should focus as
apprentices in communities of practice where learning possibilities present
themselves on a case-by-case basis. Students' progress from an apprenticeship role
to full members in their community of practice as they gain experience and
competence.

Situated learning is a type of learning that allows individual learners to learn through
socializing with other people or with knowledgeable people, or through observing
and imitating real activities in real-life situations (Barab et al., 2001). The

, abovementioned practice builds on participation and observation in activity. Situated
learning is based on practical activities whereby learners gain beneficial knowledge
that they ought to get from schools (Brown et al., 1989).

In the past years, learners were taught things that were not really useful to them in
their everyday life. Learners need to learn or acquire skills or knowledge that are
relevant to their lives and that might be related to the career that they are going to
choose in the near future. Situated learning declares that thinking, learning, and
doing cannot be separated from the practical and social situations in which they
occur. They work in harmony when the teacher allows learners to have an
opportunity to participate, demonstrate, and interact their own thoughts. This will
build their cognitive abilities. Learners will acquire specific skills by observing,
visualizing, hearing, and listening by having someone to imitate or follow. In situated
learning, the learner works through participating in a particular activity of a certain
community (Wenger, 1998).

The theory of situated cognition emphasizes that cognitive apprentices learn from the
experts themselves. Lave and Wenger discussed how apprentices become reliable
members of the community in their paper "Situated Learning: Legitimate
Peripheral Participation" (1991). Apprentices gain knowledge through their

interactions with experts in that field. Situated learning gives students the chance to
engage with real-life, problem-solving contexts.

The best learning happens when learners are given an issue themselves and should
thoroughly consider and follow up on like the specialists. Issues should be
reasonable and applicable to the present circumstance (Barab et al., 2001).

Examples of Situated Learning Theory
Situated Learning Theory (SLT) emphasizes the importance of learning through
active participation in real-life situations and contexts, rather than simply learning
through instruction or abstract concepts (Lave & Wenger, 1991). SLT suggests that
individuals learn best when they are immersed in the community of practice,
surrounded by experts and peers, and have access to opportunities for learning that
are relevant to their current context (Brown, Collins, & Duguid, 1989).
