ESSAY QUESTION
In the South African context, over and above teaching Foundation/Intermediate
Phase learners how to read and write, it is also very important to sensitize
them to issues of diversity from an early age. Write an essay in which you
discuss why teaching learners about diversity is important, why literary texts
are a good resource to use to teach about diversity, and what benefits this can
have for the learners’ social/cultural wellbeing.
To be able to respond to the question well, first read through Unit 3 and Unit 5
of your Study Guide. Unit 3 will give you an overview of what diversity is and
its impact on South African classrooms, as well as some insights into how
literary texts can be used to teach about diversity. Unit 5 gives an overview of
how to write an academic essay.
A well-presented essay would include/explore the following:
1. A thorough explication of what diversity is, what it entails, and its influence
on South African schools.
2. Why it is important to teach learners about diversity from an early age.
3. Why literary texts can be beneficial to teaching young learners about
diversity; and
4. The social and cultural benefits of teaching learners about diversity.
Diversity is about what makes each of us unique and includes our backgrounds,

a combination of our differences that shape our view of the world, our perspective,
and our approach. Diversity is also about recognising, respecting and valuing
differences based on ethnicity, gender, age, race, religion, disability, and sexual
orientation. It also includes an infinite range of individual unique characteristics and
experiences, such as communication style, career path, life experience, educational
background, geographic location, income level, marital status, parental status, and
