Unit 2 Business Resources
Merit Criteria 2
M2 – Assess the importance of employability and personal skills in the recruitment and
retention of staff in a selected organisation
Tesco usually recruits staff using an online application form, questions are asked to see the
suitability of the potential employee for the job role they are applying for. Recruitment of new
employees is usually a lengthy process this means that once Tesco has found the candidate they are
going to try their best to keep them within that role for as long as possible, the best way to do this is
to ensure that they are employing the right candidate for the job by ensuring they have the essential
employability and personal skills for the role.
Employability skills
Qualification(s) in management studies, it is a good idea for a manager to have a qualification in
management studies, it will help the employee to know what they need to do and how to do it. A
qualification in management would not be necessary even though it is useful, this is because when
you are a customer service manager at Tesco you are on the shop floor instead of being in an office
which means you could easily learn on the job how to manage the people you are dealing with.
Qualifications from different universities could be more or less useful as the course content varies
from course to course, so what you did to gain your qualification could be more appropriate to look
at. A person who has a qualification in management studies would be a more desirable person than
someone who doesn’t have a qualification in management studies and maybe more likely to stay
within the role because they knew exactly what the job would entail before they applied and it is
what they want to do, this is similar for most skilled roles within the organisation. For unskilled roles
within Tesco qualifications may be unnecessary, it doesn’t mean they are bad to have though, having
a qualification shows that the person has determination which is a good skill to have. The issue with
having employees in unskilled roles that have qualifications is that they are unlikely to stay within
the job role they have and may even move companies from Tesco.
Experience, it is desirable to have experience in any job you go for and specifically in a management
job as it shows that you have the right attributes and are fully capable. An employer comparing the
importance of experience to a qualification might favour experience because it shows that the
employee is fully capable, the qualification in management studies only shows that they have the
correct knowledge and they may but not necessarily be able to fulfil the requirements that the role
presents. The candidate who has experience knows what they are getting into they may stay within
the role longer than someone who hasn’t had the previous experience as that person may realise
that they don’t actually like the job and might want to try other jobs till they find the job they are
best suited to.
Product knowledge may not be the most important skill when it comes to a customer service
manager, it is more necessary for the employee to know how to diffuse situations and how to
manage his/her team members. Many products are sold by Tesco so it would be impossible for the
staff to know the technicalities of all the products they are selling, but if a potential employee was
applying for a job in a particular department it would be necessary for them to know about the
products. If an employee is responsible for marketing the product then they are going to need a
much more extensive understanding of the product than if they were just responsible for stacking
shelves, a shelf stacker would only need to know where they are meant to put the product for
example milk needs to be kept in fridges but a product marketer will need to know the ins and outs
of the product as they will be asked questions which they need to know the answer to. The
importance of product knowledge always depends on the job role, of which there are many within
Tesco, basic knowledge of the products Tesco sells is always a good idea but some roles don’t really
