NSG 6435 NSG6435 Week 4 Discussion Exam study guide.
Week 4 Discussion Peds This week, complete the Aquifer case titled Pediatrics 13: 6-year-old female with chronic cough. This case can be found under Aquifer Family Medicine. Apply information from the Aquifer case study to answer the following questions: 1. Do you recommend a limited or an involved use of antibiotics in treatment of these disease(s) and other unconfirmed bacterial illnesses and why? What are the standards regarding the use of antibiotics in pediatric population, and what assessment findings would warrant prescribing an antibiotic for asthma symptoms? Recent research evidence has shown that prescriptions of broad spectrum antibiotics have increased (Jankauskaite & Oostenbrink, 2021). Overtreatment of children are especially prominent in infectious diseases, when fever or other symptoms such as cough can be unspecific and can be of viral or bacterial origin. This over-prescription of antibiotics, when none are necessary, has increased the resistance of bacteria to antibiotics making it more difficult to treat bacterial infections. The American Academy of Pediatrics or the Choosing Wisely initiative assess the quality of different scientific studies, summarize them, and provide evidence-based recommendations for clinicians. These guidelines are regularly updated with new evidence, which can help guide the process of reducing inappropriate prescriptions of medications and over-testing (Jankauskaite & Oostenbrink, 2021). The CDC has also established a standard for the use of antibiotics in pediatrics. These standards include certain infectious diseases most common in children, such as sinusitis which must be treated with antibiotics only if there is evidence that the cause is a bacterial infection (Jankauskaite & Oostenbrink, 2021). Another example is Acute Otitis Media. The CDC standard of care is to use of antibiotics: amoxicillin as the first line of treatment. Also, the CDC recommends the use of rapid antigen detection test (RADT) for pharyngitis to make an adequate differential diagnosis and to determine the viral or bacterial etiology of the infection and justifies the use of antibiotics. As for URI and bronchiolitis, the CDC recommends
