A debate was held in the department of Language Education, Arts and Culture,
during which the participants discussed the role of the home language in the
acquisition of a first additional language. One group of colleagues believed the
home language does not have an influence on the acquisition of an additional
language, while the other group argued that the home language plays a vital
role in the acquisition of a first additional language.

opinion regarding the role of the home language? Provide evidence to

Over many years and in many contexts, research has clearly demonstrated that
there is a relationship between first/dominant language development and learning a
new language at school. Children need to develop strong foundations in the
language that is dominant in the home, where most children spend most of their
time. Home language skills are transferable to new languages and strengthen
children’s understanding of language use. When learners use their home language
to learn another language, their understanding and performance is likely to improve.
