QUESTION 1

1. A multilingual classroom may suggest that there are students who speak different
languages, or they all speak English, but in different ways. To teach a class English as
a home language I would need to consider the age and needs of the students in the
classroom. I would also consider their culture, background and what other languages
they speak.

2. A subjective style of writing is when we use words that tend to be factual, provable,
and rational whereas an objective style of writing is when we use words that are
personal, probable, and opinionated. These different styles of writing will be used in
different contexts, which demonstrates that you know the purposes of language
which include empowering people, create a strong identity, and obtaining access to
opportunities for development in different levels.

3.

3.1 Morphemes are the use of prefixes and suffixes to a root word. I changed the word
“antonyms” to “morphemes” because antonyms are words that mean to opposite of
another word.
3.2 Collocation refers to the grouping of words to facilitate understanding. Collocation
links words in a sentence, not sentences in a paragraph.
3.3 The smallest unit of sound that has a meaning is called a phoneme. I changed the word
“phonetics” to “phoneme” because phonetics are signs representing sounds.
3.4 Anaphora is an example of the repetitive use of the same words in a sentence. I
changed the word “redundancy” to “anaphora” because redundancy means using two
different words one after the other that are synonyms. For example: I reversed
backwards.”
3.5 The study of the structure of sentences is called syntactics. I changed the word
“semantics” to “syntactics” because semantics are the study of the
important/meaningful use of words in a sentence.

4. Phonemic awareness is the ability to recognize different sounds in a language. An
example of phonemic awareness in preventing miscommunication would be of
someone giving directions to someone about baking a cake, if the person asked you
to put flour in a bowl, you would know that it sounds like flower but because you are
awareness of the context you are using it in you would not put roses in the cake. This
would prevent miscommunication when someone may want to bake a cake, they
would not be using flowers. Semantics is the understanding of words that are used in
a sentence in a way that makes sense. It can prevent miscommunication. Someone
who is using the English language may say, “I wore the hat” so because we already
have phonemic awareness and know that war and wore sound the same, we would
now need to focus on the context of the sentence, this is semantics. This prevents

miscommunication in that we know that a war is a battle, it is not the past tense of
the verb wearing.

QUESTION 2

1. The literal meaning of “remote multi-modal teaching and learning” is teaching and
learning in a variety of different ways (multi-modal) that is all done virtually. This
means that there are no face-to-face interactions (remote).
2. In sentence one, the words “developed detailed” show alliteration. The connotative
meaning, which is based on my own person experiences and knowledge, of the words
above is that something has been made up that has taken much time and effort and
said thing is very involved or complicated.
3. It is implied that new online learning and teaching strategies will be implemented. It
also implies that government will be working closely with the universities to achieve
this.
4. The collocation “working closely” in the given text gives a serious tone to the sentence
and intends to provide the reader with a message of being serious and committed to
the implementation of these strategies. This is being the words “working closely” tend
to suggest that two parties are working together, in this case it is the government and
universities.
5. I do not find this claim convincing. At the time, many underprivileged students were
not given the basic sanitation needed in their schools to go back to school to complete
their curriculum in time for the national examinations. This means that the detailed
institutional plans to ensure fairness for completing the academic year in time would
not be effective if the students could not go back to school because the government
had not supported their needs for sanitation during this pandemic.

QUESTION 3

The literal meaning of “throttles practice” means to strangle or choke teaching and learning,
this is impossible which brings me to the connotative meaning; that the practices involved in
the teaching and learning processes are being destroyed or diminished. Knowing what it
means to throttle practice, we can now look at why I believe that online teaching and learning
does not “throttle” practice.

I believe that, although some students or teachers have struggled working online, most of
them found that they were able to work better and faster. Students were able to work alone
without the disruptions of other students, they got one on one attention from their teachers
because they were able to get hold of their teachers at any time of the day when they needed
