1. INTRODUCTION
This assignment will be discussing the following topics: Quantitative content analysis,
narrative analysis, film theory and criticism, and media audience theory. A definition of
content analysis and its purpose will be discussed. Three advantages of content
analysis were explained. Two suitable research questions were also included in the
study. An hour-long television series episode was selected, and its name will be
provided. Two categories of dramatis personae will be discussed. Additionally, the
difference between film criticism and film analysis will be explained, and the four forms
of film historiography based on the work of Allen and Gomery will be elaborated on. A
suitable research problem for a proposal for DSTV will be formulated, and four
assumptions of reception theory will be explained. Lastly, the assignment will discuss
whether reception theory is suitable to study the reasons why viewers watch
telenovelas.
2. QUANTITATIVE CONTENT ANALYSIS
2.1 A definition of content analysis and its purpose
According to Wigston (2018: 5), a study technique called content analysis measures the
frequency of a particular phenomenon (such as violence, a derogatory portrayal of
women, or anything else) in a representative sample of a widely disseminated popular
art form (Wigston 2018: 5).
