Koerdistan staat bekend om haar diversiteit, sterker nog, het is het meest divers gebied in
heel het Midden-Oosten! Heel veel verschillende mensen met verschillende religies komen
hier bij elkaar. Zo heb je moslims en christenen, maar ook bijvoorbeeld yezidis en
zoroastristen. Ook zijn er veel verschillende etniciteiten. Niet alleen de Koerden, maar ook
Arabieren, Armenen, Turkmenen, etc. wonen hier.
Religieus toerisme
Door de diversiteit in religie trekt Koerdistan veel
bezoekers van over de hele wereld. Ze willen allemaal
graag de verschillende tempels, moskeeën, kerken en
andere religieuze plaatsen zien. Zo heb je bijvoorbeeld
Lalish; de heiligste plaats voor yezidis. Hier bevindt zich
het graf van de oprichter van het jezidisme en de Lalish
tempel. Ook is er het Klooster van Sint Mattheüs; het
oudste christelijke klooster in de wereld! Het bevindt zich
op de berg beter bekend als “Mountain of the
Thousands”, vernoemd naar de duizend monniken die
daar leefden.
