In tegelstelling tot idee fasegewijze ontwikkeling:

o Strategieontwikkeling als vervangen van oude strategie door nieuwe, kwalitatief
betere strategie.

Moeilijkste concept uit het kader van Siegler.
Adaptiviteit = het kind stemt zijn strategie af op bv. de
itemkenmerken. Dat we 8 + 9 niet doen als 9 + 2 + 7 (splitsstrategie).
We gebruiken hier een 10-strategie omdat die 9 zo dicht bij 10 ligt en
zo gemakkelijker is.
Niet enkel op itemkenmerken, maar ook op persoonlijke
kenmerken, nl. “Wat heb ik aan voorkennis en de voorkennis
waarover ik beschik, gebruik ik die om een strategie te kiezen?”
Veel discussie over geweest. Er werd beweerd dat kinderen met
een leerstoornis veel minder adaptief zijn, veel meer de neiging
hebben om dezelfde strategie aan te houden. Ze zijn rigider in
strategiegebruik.
