Some examples from this set of practice questions

1.

Give quantitative definition of torque.

Answer: - Torque (moment of force) is equal to product of magnitude of force and perpendicular distance between fixed point and point of application of force (is also called as couple arm). Unit of moment of force- - SI unit = Nm = dynecm

2.

State the factors affecting the turning effect of force.

Answer: The factors are--- - Magnitude force and the perpendicular distance between the fixed point of application of force. - Moment of force is directly proportional to the perpendicular distance.

3.

State two conditions for a body to be equilibrium.

Answer: The conditions are--- - The resultant of all forces acting on the body is zero. - The resultant of moment of force acting at the point of rotation is zero

4.

Mention the two types of equilibrium.

Answer: (i) Static equilibrium- when a body remains in the same state of rest under the influence of several forces. Ex:- A book lying on the table. (ii) Dynamic equilibrium- when a body remains in the same state of motion under the influence of several forces. Ex:- A raindrop reaches earth at a constant velocity

5.

State the principle of moments.

Answer: In equilibrium sum of anticlockwise momentum = sum of all clockwise moments. Ex:- Beam balance and See-Saw.

FORCE
FORCE APPLIED ON A BODY:-
- Bring rest body to motion.
- Bring moving body to rest.
- Bring change in velocity (speed and distance).
- Bring change in shape and size of the body.

FORCE APPLIED ONA BODY PRODUCES TWO TYPES OF MOTION:-
LINEAR MOTION --- it is not fixed at a point and is free to move.

CIRCULAR MOTION --- the body is fixed at a point and is free to rotate about the fixed
axis of rotation.

Torque (moment of force):- A force applied on a body which is fixed to a point and is free to
rotate above the axis is called torque.

Q1. Give quantitative definition of torque.

Ans:- Torque (moment of force) is equal to product of magnitude of force and perpendicular
distance between fixed point and point of application of force (is also called as couple arm).
Unit of moment of force-

- SI unit = Nm = dynecm

Q2. State the factors affecting the turning effect of force.

Ans:- The factors are---

- Magnitude force and the perpendicular distance between the fixed point of
application of force.
- Moment of force is directly proportional to the perpendicular distance.

Equilibrium of a body:-

Q3. State two conditions for a body to be equilibrium.

Ans:- The conditions are---

- The resultant of all forces acting on the body is zero.
- The resultant of moment of force acting at the point of rotation is zero.
