Character analysis
Heathcliff
The protagonist of the novel is Heathcliff, whose introduction highlights his rather dark countenance
and cold personality as an adult. “But, Mr Heathcliff forms a singular contrast to his abode and style
of living. He is a dark skinned gypsy, in aspect, in dress, and manners a gentleman, that is, as much a
gentleman as many a country squire: rather slovenly, perhaps, yet not looking amiss with his
negligence, because he has an erect and handsome figure, and rather morose; possibly, some people
might suspect him of a degree of underbred pride” (Brontë, 2020, pp. 4-5). Although Heathcliff was
brought into the Earnshaw family, as an orphan, by Mr. Earnshaw, barely anything is known about his
past. “Not a soul knew to whom it [Heathcliff] belonged, he said, and his money and time, being both
limited, he thought it better to take it home with him, at once, than to run into vain expenses there;
because he was determined he would not leave it as he found it.” (Brontë, 2020, p. 51). In addition,
Heathcliff’s actions after Catherine’s marriage to Edgar Linton are fuelled by wrath, and a desire for
revenge. Heathcliff can be considered a Byronic hero, for qualities such as an unknown past and
vengeful actions fit the characteristics of a Byronic hero.
Character development
When Heathcliff is first introduced into the Earnshaw family, almost everyone approaches him in a
disrespectful manner. For example, people such as the Lintons and Hindley use the derogatory term
‘gypsy’ to refer to Heathcliff. ““Miss Earnshaw scouring the country with a gipsy!””[Mrs. Linton]
(Brontë, 2020, p. 70). Although Catherine and Heathcliff eventually become inseparable as children,
