What is the Douglas Treatie?

The Douglas Treaties is a set of eleven treaties made in the mid-nineteenth century between the
First Nations people of Vancouver Island and the Colony of Vancouver Island. Sir James
Douglas negotiated the treaties, establishing a land acquisition system in exchange for
numerous commitments, such as reserves for their use and profit, hunting and fishing privileges,
and various commodities and services. They are notable because they were among the first
treaties negotiated between Indigenous peoples and Europeans in Canada and remain an
important part of Indigenous and Canadian history.

Why did the Douglas treaties happen?

The Douglas Treaties were the outcome of discussions between Vancouver Island's First
Nations people and the Colony of Vancouver Island, a British colony in what is now Canada.
Between 1850 and 1854, the treaties were negotiated as the colony tried to acquire territory for
colonization and resource extraction. The treaties were negotiated with First Nations leaders by
Governor James Douglas, who was also a fur trader and had already built links with local
Indigenous peoples. The treaties were viewed as a peaceful means to acquire land and
resources while also resolving some of the problems of displaced Indigenous people. Yet, the
talks were difficult, reflecting diverse Indigenous peoples' understandings of land ownership and
use.
