, 1) Introduction
In the field of education, constructivism is a learning theory that emphasizes
the active role of learners in constructing knowledge rather than passively
absorbing it. From a constructivist perspective, it is essential to create
learning environments and activities that engage students in actively
constructing their understanding. This essay critically responds to the
statement by exploring the application of constructivist principles in teaching
numbers, patterns, and relationships in the Intermediate Phase. Through
personal experiences, observations, and general readings, this essay
highlights the importance of constructivist approaches in promoting
meaningful learning in mathematics education.

Constructivism is an approach to learning that creates an environment where
the learners have the ability to establish and grow their own thoughts,
conclusions and observations through their own experiences by working
together with their classroom peers. Constructivism is placing emphasis on
the learners’ capacity to represent their own knowledge. This teaching allows
individuals to engage themselves in active experiences which guides them to
discover where there are gaps in their foundational knowledge, which their
peers can be involved in guiding them and creating a deeper understanding of
knowledge and broadens it. (Keengwe, Onchwari, & Agamba, 2013).

According to Akpan and Beard (2016), it is a way of justifying ideas and
putting them together to create new ideas by understanding new experiences
from prior knowledge so that new ideas are completely understood by the
learners. According to Keengwe, et al (2013) Constructivism is essential in a
classroom because it allows the learning to be more personal and involve the
learners in shaping their own learning. This means they will be able to
problem solve, create their own curiosity, and most importantly develop their
own abstract, logical and critical thinking skills .(Enri International School
Foundation, 2008).

Constructivism in Education
Applying constructivism to a classroom is not centered around teaching
strategies alone, but rather it is stated by Matthews (2003) , that there is an
emphasis that needs to be placed on the environment of the classroom. There
are two main roles in a classroom. The first role is of the teacher and the
teaching methods chosen by the educator. The teacher needs to create an
environment of active engagement. This can be achieved by teaching the
